A lot of talk about the difference in quality of lists between Pies and Dons. I have a rational Pies supporting mate (yes one exists) who was more upbeat about our list and was confused by the messaging around Essendon being developing.
Worth remembering that we didnāt lose to Pies last year, so why are we now saying that we should be miles off the Pies.
Interestingly, we did a joint best 22 of both clubs lists, assuming both were fit. This is what we came up with
Ridley Moore Quaynor
Houston Howe Daicos
Martin Cameron Merrett
Daicos Caldwell Sidebottom
Shultz Langford DeGoey
Hill Wright Elliott
Redman, Pendlebury, Durham, Draper
I pushed back against Redman being in the team over Maynard, but my mate said Maynard is having a shocking year too.
So 9 Dons and 13 Pies, with most of the better players coming from Pies. So clearly a quality imbalance. But not huge. Pretty clear we need at least 2 more A graders to get us competitive with the top sides
However, most of those 13 Pies players are superior players to nearly all of the 9 Essendon players.
The gulf in skill, ability to spread, and compete is still vast.
You think Dodoro just went off and did all of that on his own? No input from the coach? CEO not involved? Hell, the board just blinked and went āhow did that happen?ā? That there was a different 5-year plan Dodorro just ignored? That we werenāt talking to players months out and it was all a surprise to management?
Blitzers need to realise that the EFC board and management have chased finals wins for a decade and theyāre all involved. And not simply use Dodorro to blame everything on. He left, and there was nothing particularly different in our off-season. The management at fan events/the AGM are still saying weāre aiming for finals. Scott isnāt selecting a development team, but putting out his team to win. Barham has been on the board for two (or is it three?) terms already.
Of the players out of contract at the end of this season Iām farking off Goldy, Lual, Jones, Setterfield and Shiel.
Hobbs, Laverde, Draper, Bryan and Reid Iād be renewing.
Davey Jnr is in the cannon and is 50/50 for me right now.
That would open up 6 list spots so maybe we would look to trade a couple out that had a bit of market (e.g. Perkins, Cox).
We take our first and Melbourneās at the draft for best talent and use our 2nd round picks to pick up Sweid and El Achkar. Then bring another 2-4 players with late picks/rookie/SSP.
As much as I would love Harley Reid I am more convinced than ever that we need more turnover of our list and if Brad is incapable of picking a young side then as others have said you take temptation away from him!
