List build - where are we going in the next 70,000 posts? (Part 3)

How is he in our NGA?

I meant we’ll have a first from hawks (whatever that is), plus pick 2 or 3 from finishing bottom -ish.

If we can snag another solid first rounder (somehow) it would give us another great opportunity to get a group of highly rated players in at the same time.

Obviously we don’t know how things go, but if Bewick is rated top 10 in the draft and Darwish a teens pick, we’re likely quite farked. Remember, Tassie will have pinched 8 odd kids a year out, and have a heap of picks. So Bewick and Darwish might move into being top 5 and top 10. With our ability to match hampered by the new rules and Tassie’s extra picks.

And Rodan seems more likely to pick Port; although it may come down to who has the picks to satisfy him they can select him.

We seem have a core of younger players now to build on just need to keep adding more

All I keep hearing is that Rodman wants to be at Port but I just can’t see how Port gets 2 of them let alone all 3 next year

Rodans draft range if he was eligible this year?

Ridley goes to Brisbane they will fix him. He will continue to be broken wth us. I could easily see them giving up their first for him.

Could end up with a draft hand after nga/fa picks along the lines of:

Pick 4/5 - our pick for finishing 16th/17th after nga’s.

Pick 18/19 - Merrett to hawthorn or better if he goes to someone else like Collingwood

Pick 20 - Ridley to Brisbane

Pick 22/23 - Compensation pick for our first being pushed down the order in the top 5.

Pick 26/27 - Our 2nd rounder

Can do a lot with those picks by taking players with them or moving up like we did for Sharp. Those picks will also be wanted due to 27 Tassie impact. Should be able to get really good value for them and use as points for 27 nga/fa prospects.

That’s before considering moving others on for later picks in 26/27 such as Parish and Redman.

Use fa or the later picks above for experienced players that are being pushed out of good teams that offer leadership.

This is the way.

We need to get a critical mass of these young players. I’m more confident in our ability to spot talent via the draft than I have been in a long time. Our trade and FA acquisitions have been poor to say the least. Look at the last 5 years:

Weideman

Setterfield

Goldstein

Gresham

McKay

Duursma

Prior

Fiorini

That is seriously underwhelming. I’d say of that lot Duursma has been the pick of them, and he is just a role player. Don’t bring anyone in to the club unless they offer tangible benefits to the club, especially in terms of leadership.

We are at the point where we need to find the next Luke Parker/Jack Darling to help guide and mentor and be an on-field coach for the youngsters. Our existing leaders are the worst in the AFL. It needs to change.

Seeing Sharp and Robey yesterday made me more ■■■■■■ off at Dodoro. This guy tried to convince us Shiel, Parish, Merrett, McGrath and Langford was a premiership standard midfield.

Watching 18 year olds Robey and Sharp wear tackles from senior players and getting out clean disposals made me think of how much of our time and energy Dodoro wasted

I’ll never forget that he called Tom Cutler a big bodied mid despite being as outside as a player can get.

You can’t pick them if they’re not available. Stronger drafts make it easier.

Who says they weren’t available?
Doesn’t help when you trade away picks continuously. He absolutely butchered our list

Simply looking at who got picked around our picks and a bit later.

With the Shiel trade he was moved out of negotiations because he wouldn’t hand over as much. Pretty tough to then blame him for trading away all our picks.

That’s a very simplistic way of looking at things.
We had opportunities to trade out players and get picks in
He was in charge of the list management and never once assembled a decent list
He set this club back a long way with his utter incompetence

I’m referencing midfield balance not necessarily top end players. Think of players like Newcombe and George Hewett.

We needed a two way running mid capable of winning his own ball and wearing contact. We also needed at least one goal-kicking mid. What we ended up with is a bunch of mids incapable of wearing contact, playing hot potato with the ball and unable to score.

We chased after Shiel who was never that player at GWS instead of either going to the draft or using it to chase a player that balances our midfield. We persisted with that midfield balance because of the capital we spent.

We did not meet Bulldogs’ demands for Dunkley who is exactly the type of player we needed because of the capital we spent on Shiel. It had a flow on effect.

Dodoro did not know how to build a balanced midfield.

He assembled a good list by 2013, this little thing called the saga blew it.

I’ve said before if he was the one pushing for finals and to keep players he should be fired but I doubted it was. Given Rosa has continued the practice I feel pretty confident that wasn’t/isn’t something in the list manager’s purview.

That 2013 was too slow in the middle and had a very weak forward line. It wasn’t going deep into a finals series.

Well we’ll never know.

Retrospective drafting is a bit naff, but if you look at who got picked at around our picks and a bit later, it’s not hard to make a case our picks could have been a lot better.
2015
Francis. Curnow slipped because he refused a breathalyser, but it wouldn’t have been a stretch to take him.
Parish. Good
Redman. Good
Morgan. Bad but given what came after him also fine.
Mitch Brown. Two picks later, Jordan Dawson
Yestin Eades. Absolute bust. Two picks later, Sam Menegola
Hartley. Fine
Tippa. Good.

2016
McGrath. His leadership tipped the balance. McCluggage is also a club captain.
Ridley. Good.
Begley. Two picks later Willem Drew.
Mutch. Not great, but nothing amazing immediately after, so whatever.
Dylan Clarke. Same as Mutch, Luke Ryan’s good but not a midfielder.
Rookie Draper. Good
Re-rookied Eades only to cut him early in the season. Next pick Oscar McInerney (we were looking for rucks that year)

2017
Fine, got Guelfi and Zerk for nothing and not much was on offer.

2018
Mosquito. Five picks later Jack Ross.
Gown. Next pick Idun.
Ham. Not good but no alternatives really

2019
Trade up to get Harrison Jones. I suspect if we had Curnow instead of Francis at this point, we probably don’t do that. Leaves us with pick 35 and 39.
Nick Bryan. One pick later Chad Warner. With McInerney we probably don’t need a ruck here, but 35 and 39 lets us take both

So from 2015-2019 just in the midfield that’s
Dawson, Menegola (retired), McCluggage, Drew, McInerney, Warner
replacing
Brown, Eades, McGrath, Begley, Bryan

Yes, lots of clubs passed on those later guys, development, coaching etc, etc. But if you just look at who got picked within two picks of who we took, our midfield could have been and still be outrageously better.

That’s not what was being argued. It was questioned why we didn’t recruit more mobile big bodied midfielders.

You’ve just redone about 5 drafts and added … two, one of whom would be many years retired and looked good in the Geelong midfield.

I really hope we can give Gerreyn an extension. Though he looked ok in the VFL and reckon there is something to work with. I do know that West Coast have made enquiries but hopefully we have something decent in the wings for him
