List build - where are we? Where are we going next (Part 1)

Both on the Cat B rookie list (perhaps)? Edit - can’t have more than one Irish player on a Cat B rookie list. FFS!!!

That would leave us with:

38 senior listed players (incl Draper promotion, retention of Hearts & Brown).
2 rookies (Snelling & one of McQuillan & McBride).
1 Cat B int rookie (McQuillan or McBride).

Use 31 & 33 in the draft (takes us to 40 senior listed players).

Remaining positions on the rookie list.

Is it though. It’s just “delist the obvious” to me. Which is fine, and was probably the right call, but there’s nothing staggering in today’s moves.

No, it went deeper then that.

Mynott could have gone another year on the rookie list, and a few felt he had potential.

Tom only got 1 year to show his wares, and he made his AFL debut in round 23.

Tom can consider himself pretty unlucky, and Mynott might reasonably wonder what would happen if he was named Long.

I would’ve kept Mynott. But he’s not exactly a shock, either. We’ve a lot of inside mids and he hasn’t played a game in 2 years.

Rest pretty obvious IMO.

It’s just clearing up space on our rookie list (mainly) which is saying that they have potentially identified players in the pre-season draft & that they may wanna leave some space later for the mid-season draft.

There is no need to leave space for the mid-season draft. If we have no LTI’s, we shouldn’t participate.

I would highly recommend we fill all list spots available.

I don’t think Longs performances in the seniors were particularly bad given where he was at. It was the lack of consistent impact at VFL level thateant he didn’t get more opportunity.

He started to impact more consistently at VFL level the last 18 months or so, but needed to take it to another level to get a game (although deserved a game late in the year more than a couple of others), and then his time was up. It’s tough when you’re a famous name, but coming to the club on the back of zero football for 2 years. He always was going to be a long term project, but people have expectations around the name. I suspect, in hindsight, it might have been better to do what was done with Mason Fletcher, and get him a year of being fit before bringing him into the system.

But it was a weird time for the club around 2015, so good news stories were important.

What’s ruthless about any of this?

Outside Zlarke, the 3 guys cut today played about 3 games between them over the last 2 years.

Ruthless would be cutting DLarke, Hartley and Brown.

or silly…

Two sides of the same coin.

Yep.

So far this is just stock standard list management.

True.

Clarke would be awfully unlucky to go. 21 year old inside mid who had a significant influence on a couple of the games he played, and is a VFL gun.

Hartley and Brown don’t have contracts yet that we know of. So they may still be in the gun. Although Brown did play 16 games in 2019, so that doesn’t generally lead to delisting. And Hartley, given the age of Hooker and Hurley, seems to me to be reasonable back-up.

Agree. Nothing ruthless at all with what has taken place so far but I agree with the calls they have made. Mynott perhaps the only one who has shown something that made me think he could possibly make it.

Wrong Clarke

I think these were the right calls. You need to keep players like Brown and Hartley. What happens if we get injuries to JoeDan, Hooks and Hurley again in 2020. We need back ups.

In his 3rd year and a long, long way from the best 22 IMO.

100%

You need depth who are going to be competent at AFL level.

I agree on balance.

Fair chance they’ll just play through the injuries anyway.
