wowee grant ‘zac merrett doesn’t need to have a blinder just needs 25 and 2 goals and they win a flag’
Another great thing. Couple of things I didn’t agree with though:
-
The Hawks will offer more. We should be pushing to get their future first-rounder as part of the deal. It will be worth next to nothing to them, but it could be really valuable to us for matching bids and giving us greater flexibility next year. From an Essendon perspective, having multiple first-round picks involved also makes the deal much easier to sell publicly.
-
Splitting the first pick isn’t something we should be doing, in my view, unless we have a side deal with Port. We bid on Walker, secure our compensation pick, and then trade what has become pick 2 for Port’s two first-rounders. I just think we’d otherwise be giving up the opportunity to effectively secure another top-20 pick for free. Given the state of our list, and with Tassie coming in, we simply can’t afford to pass that up. The lack of any other meaningful compensation has effectively forced our hand.
Unless they’ve changed the rule in the last day or so (I don’t mean this facetiously, it wouldn’t surprise me) that’s not how it works. The compensation picks get handed out after the first night of the draft, and you only get one if you actually draft a player with the pick that got pushed back. If we bid then trade, we get no compensation pick.
Grant is becoming harder and harder to listen to…
Agree
Here is what could happen
Essendon bid on Walker with pick one
Carlton match
Essendon then trade pick 2, 19 and 25 to Port for 4&5
Port get the first real selection
Richmond bid on dougie cochrane
Port match with 19 and their 2nd rounder (they keep 25)
We turn pick 1&25 into picks 4&5.
I think this idea has already been floated and knocked back as Carlton are telling the Walker family they won’t match a bid at pick 1 (and I believe them).
Nah, 2 for 5&6.
This isn’t true, they have two very good prospects in their NGA for next year.
19 and port’s current 2nd rounder (22) isn’t enough points to match a bid at 3, even if they go into the maximum future deficit.
It was a good episode.
One thing that wasn’t talked about was Arki Butler….. all of the top end guys were discussed except Butler.
Why I’m pointing this out. Is that Jasper has Butler ranked at no.2 (behind Cochrane) on his latest ESPN draft rankings.
Is Butler significantly better than The other rated small forwards? Dogs will struggle to get their NGA guy, Thats what makes me think it will be Drever with 1 and then the best available small forward with either the Merrett or second pick.
Problem with trading pick 1 which will become pick 2 after bide on Walker is that we lose the compensation pick. We have to use our top pick to draft a player at its original position.
My read is that if your first pick is pushed back you are eligible for the compensation pick. But you may be right, the fine print - or lack of it - may be that we are still then required to hold the pick and take it on a player.
Scooter has popped another pod up.
Well done mate! It’s really nice to have something to listen to on this stuff. Just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate it.
cheers.
Thanks mate.
The rules are pretty clear
Key Rules & Eligibility Criteria
-
Ladder Requirement: A club must finish in the bottom five of the ladder in the preceding season.
-
Selection Sliding: The club’s natural first-round selection must be pushed back by at least one spot due to a matched bid (such as a rival matching a bid on a concessional prospect).
-
Usage Requirement: The club must use their original top-five pick to actually select a player (they do not qualify if they trade away their natural pick or use it to match a bid for another player).
-
Cap & Placement: The compensation pick is limited to one per club each draft, is tied to the club’s ladder position, and is awarded/determined at the conclusion of night one of the National Draft.
-
Trading: The compensation pick can be traded during the window prior to night two of the draft
Yep fair enough. But the point is we will have met the usage criteria technically even though we don’t get a player - the club must use their original top-five pick to actually select a player. Under the scenario I proposed we have used it on Walker even if Fark Carlton match.
Pretty sure that by “select” they mean ended up with a player on your list.
They probably do mean that. But it is the AFL so they would probably make the rule up on the run.
Remind me never to engage Grant to negotiate on my behalf ![]()
Another great pod lads well done.
I think statistically this year he’d be worse rated than el souki, Elliot, neocleous, that’s why you don’t burn pick 1 on him.
