This club refuses to hold itself accountable for anything.
Iāll never forget that Brendan Gale interview on FC where they were grilling him about the audacity of his 5 year multi-premiership plan and implied that he should be embarrassed by it becoming public.
Nobody at Essendon would ever even dream of responding the way he did, completely genuine, unwavering and unapologetic.
Itās not hard to see why the tigers achieved their objectives under that sort of leadership.
Other clubs could probably use that to sell more memberships. āSign up before Xmas and get your free commemorative 7500 days since Essendon won a final pin. Also includes free drinks card at our 8000 days party.ā
It comes down to whether or not you attribute our late season collapse in 2013 to the players being told behind the scenes they werenāt playing finals, or just typical, business as usual 21st century Essendon.
We were a top 4 team that year until that game vs Hawthorn. Thereās an argument to be made that we were top 4 due to wins owed to an emotional response to the media onslaught at the time, however we were generally on an upwards trajectory following the hiring of Hird.
Iād argue we played more impressive football in 2014, however I canāt agree with @blob saying we were onto āsomething greatā for all the reasons that a visibly frustrated Bomba expressed in his pressers that year.
That era of Essendon will always be a āwhat-if,ā but itās worth remembering that the Saga was ultimately merely a symptom of our illness.
My point was that the immense upheaval that occurred then cannot be conveniently ignored when diagnosing the clubās ongoing malaise since the Sheedy era.
Spot on, it is almost like we are expected to celebrate when our team has a decent crack- it is a non-negotiable in every other club. Imagine dishing those efforts consistently at the swans or cats. They just would not play seniors.
I havenāt been a member for 20 years and wonāt be one until they sack the entire board and start again. I donāt feel bad at all, I feel vindicated. Best thing supporters can do is not renew memberships and let the team get taken over by the AFL.
Yeah but, the salary cap kind of ensures that every team is going to have talent , roughly the same amount of raw talent in fact. The difference between the teams is always going to be psychological, physiological and coachingā¦ the areas we fall down.
absolutely, look at carlton last year, a basket case then world beaters, the only difference was mental application, its an area where i think the club should heavily invest in, particularly psychological
Here it is!!! Bombers last Qtr heroics help keep the season alive, more importantly it helped find their identity again that was present for much of the year. Can they back it up this week? We discuss. Podcast link below.
Your podcast was indicative of the situation that Essendon has found itself in. In normal times this win against Freo would be looked at as a rousing come from behind victory. At this particular point of time people are (sort of) shrugging their shoulders and are not sure of what the win means. LCUP personified that feel.
I think most people are rightly thinking in the long term about the club. Should we win tomorrow I still think the fans and membership should still āmaintain the rageā and expect more consistancy from the club. We need to return to the ruthlessness of the Sheedy era.
