Something that caught my ear from the podcast was talk about our James Hird academy player Jayden Nguyen and his amazing results from the state testing - Top 5 in 4 events!
An excerpt from that report:

CLUB-TIED talent and fast rising prospects have dominated the AFL State Draft Combines, held in Victoria, South and Western Australia over the last fortnight. Essendon Next Generation Academy (NGA) member Jayden Nguyen dominated the Victorian event, achieving top five results in four tests.

TOP 10s: 2024 AFL National Draft Combine

Nguyen, a 178cm utility, placed equal-second in the standing vertical jump (73cm), third in the 20m sprint (2.897 seconds), equal-fourth in the running vertical jump (86cm), and fifth in the agility test (8.126 seconds). The only other athlete to match such feats was West Australian Hugh Boxshall.

He is an interesting prospect. Lots of development on skills still

You lost me at 178cm

Yeah the skills factor critical givin his size, great he can jump and is quick, but at that size, we would need a natural kick, not a project

Why do people care if a project player can’t kick?

We selected a player at pick 5 that can’t kick.

Ah yes, you get my point, i didnt want to point finger but there it is

What are his skills like broadly? Are we still comfortable recruiting gifted athletes who might not have strong skills? Or, do we think we need to recruit more footballers who can kick etc? One thing that stands out to me is Essendon’s lack of quality kickers? At what point do we change tact in a broader philosophical sense?

And that’s our problem isn’t it?

Handball is fine and he has some really good moments there. Has crazy rushes of blood which leads to poor decision making. Almost too attacking without poise. Those things can be addressed. He would be a very late pick so it has less risk to it.

You sense he just needs more games of footy and have development coaches work with him.

He was playing against Ashcroft and Murphy Reid not long ago and gets 29 disposals and 8 clearances in a final. So it’s more can he mature with his decision making. Would of had about 6-7 poor turn overs in that 29 due to rush of blood. His pressure is very good i will say

Saying that his small height I think is limited in AFL to a back pocket or small forward so unsure how that plays out

Love the draft shows! Great hearing from @THE_DON1

His point around how the draft is quite deep for small forward types got me thinking that yeah, if we trade back into the top 25 we’re probably better off going with a key forward or a mid-sized utility (unless there’s a real slider that we love).

I did chuckle at Grant hyping up a 15 yo Bewick when he’s also been saying that fans need to cool their jets on expectations of new draftees like Kako, Caddy etc and not put pressure on kids too soon lol

Massive leap though!

Competitiveness and kicking skills are the key attributes we need…… anything else is a bonus.

I’ve head a few people say that having a great tank is one element of competiveness…… which I very much disagree with.

I have a few mates (just happen to be accountants!) who are insane long distant runners, who don’t have a competitive bone in their body.

Sometimes people are just freak athletes, it doesn’t mean they’ll throw themselves into a pack…… or stick up for team mates in a mallee.

Did they go to private schools and/or come from good families?

I’ve been a broken record on saying that he should be first trialled as small pressure forward in the mould of Darcy jones from gws.
He has off the chart athletic abilities and speed to burn but is good at the defensive stuff also can nail a goal from outside fifty as seen in the vfl match he played.
I can definitely see him mowing blokes down in the forward half and applying huge pressure

Jayden Nguyen is like a 1.78m turbo charged Alwyn Davey. Fierce appetite for the contest, excellent pressure in close and ferocious tackler, extra slick hands and ball handling, very elusive and hard to tackle himself, insane speed off the mark and leap but just needs a split second extra with his kicking sometimes. Too many positives to ignore imho.
