Lunchtime Catch Up Podcast - Rohan Connolly talks through Crows poor game

Great description of him if he can add goal kicking which iam sure he can with that booming goal from fifty in the vfl he could end up a very good small forward.
Or a better replacement for hind

I think Nguyen’s kicking looks reasonably solid personally. He seems pretty well balanced and makes good contact. I’d say his technique is already a fair bit better than most on our list.

That his club was comfortable giving him the kick in responsibilities suggests they were pretty happy with his kicking too.

Obviously that’s only going off a handful of highlights but yeah, certainly he doesn’t have the glaring technical issues that tsatas had when drafted.

Personally I think we’d be crazy to pass on him. Seems a very busy little pocket rocket.

Reminds me of Nick Hind.

seems a little more under control than hind. hind was seriously good for us in his first year though, people forget.

He could be an absolute bolt from the blue, he could be Ben McNeice mkII.

He absolutely deserves a shot, though. Showed more than enough in his VFL outing to spend a low pick (or rookie spot) on.

Funny how someone 178cm is considered too small when the game has had many great players even smaller than that (which, in the real world, isn’t that small). Just at Essendon, during my time watching, we’ve had Buhagiar, Daisy Williams (a great rover), Ezard, Denham, Walla, and plenty of lesser lights. And that’s at Essendon. Greg Williams was 176cm.

I know the game has changed, but it’s also constantly evolving. There’s always a place for a quality short when they have other attributes, just not as many. I think it’s reductive and short-sighted to dismiss a player on height alone - and Nguyen sounds like he might have some tricks.

That maybe fair Ivan. Maybe its more decision making. The game i watched it was quite heavy in turnovers… but it was all due to rushing his decisions under pressure.

True enough. Diesel was a brick. A talented one.
And there was a bloke who went by the name of Lethal about that height. 178cm is not too small.

only 1 of them played in the last 20 years?

Full Forwards back then are what we consider medium forwards today. There are Mids taller than Wayne Carey running around today.

Lachie Neale has been good enough to win two Brownlows at 177cm

Yeah, there are plenty of good shorter mids and there is still a spot for them. The thing is the smaller mids need to be elite ball users and decision makers.

And arguably should have won the norm smith.
As long as you’re not a mining to be a KPP, skill and athleticism won’t stop a 178cm player from
Being drafted in2024.

The game is starting to shift as there’s far too many 193cm + plus players can who can’t hold a contested mark and the ground is so congested it’s hard to find space to lead centre between 0-80m from goal

Having a huge IQ, high end talent and work rate can do that. Its more on the rare side

There is bloke going around called Lachie Neale who is 178 cm and was pick 58 in the draft. He can play a bit.
