Make the US Politics Thread Great Again

Democracy has become such a dishonest & sordid place if individual voters in key electorates can be deliberately targeted in their millions with orchestrated smear campaigns & outright lies.

Democracy is a terrible system of government. It’s just less terrible than the other options we have come up with so far.

To be clear, is Trump using Cambridge Analytica illegal? I assume only if there are rules about lying or saying which campaign was behind an ad which were broken.

Of course, the morality and/or future implications of this kind of analysis is a different kettle of fish.

Nope. But how they got the data and go about it is.

Oh yes, its sounding like they may have broken laws to get the data. And that may have implications for guys like Bannon involved with the firm. But I doubt that impacts Trump.

Trump, maybe not.

Trump campaign, probably.

Pretty sure entrapment is illegal in most countries. That’s on Cambridge Analytica though.

ACCC apparently investigating them here now too.

Even more reason not to have a FB account.

Hopefully this costs them stacks.

Wiped over US$36 Billion off their market cap.

Unfortunately that is only a 7% hit.

You watch too much TV.

Entrapment is very legal here in Australia, and a regular theme of VicPol.

Maximum fine in the UK is around a trillion dollars.

EU finally going to do what the US doesn’t have the balls to. Get tough on tech.

Hmm. I stand corrected!

ACCC Inquiry on digital platform could address Facebook, but more in regard to competition in advertising and content with MSM. However , the Information Commissioner has signalled that he will look into Facebook in the context of recently strengthened privacy laws , including data protection. Reporting on privacy breaches is now mandatory for most public and private sector bodies. Australian laws are roughly comparable to European data protection ( where a special program is underway in the sports sector). Watch out AFL!

If you can’t inspire a couple of generations of young women, inspire a fund that might?

She was just a face for the World Bank, she didn’t ‘inspire’ it, won’t have anything more to do with it after smiling at the camera, or attempting to move her face accordingly.

The fact that it happened around the same time the Kush apparently brokered a 100 billion dollar arms deal with the Saudis is just another ‘nothing to see here’ moment. And how could anything go wrong with such a fine trade between two solid world citizens?

That arms deal was rubbish. What they did was they took a whole heap of figures from discussions that had been happening under Obama, wrapped them up in a single figure, and claimed this was the new deal. Not only had they not done any of the work, none of the deals were actually finalised. Most were tentatives, or possibilities.

But heh, it sounded good didn’t it? Fake news lol.

2016? 18 Month Test Failed.

No US government will ever stop doing deals with the Saudi’s. GOP reps are more likely to ignore the NRA.

Some things never change:

McMaster gone. Bolton to be the next National Security Advisor.

Bollton, heh? He has pretty good endurance and was pretty good at defending Goodes, but this is a big step up for him.
