Make the US Politics Thread Great Again

That is ridiculous.

The power of the superdelegates got dramatically reduced in the wake of 2016, much less a factor.

I have a feeling I stole it from somewhere.

Why is it ridiculous? Establishment Dems have been shafting progressives for ages.

To also add one more reason its ridiculous - Trump is head of the government. He is responsible for how it runs. If something truly isn’t working, saying it is failing is actually criticising the job he is doing. He’s just took much of a narcissist and nincompoop to realise he’s criticising himself.

I really hope Bernie, Biden and Hillary don’t run. They’re all way too old - no Democratic nominee that age has won the presidency in over 50 years. Democratic voters like people they can get engaged in, and that hasn’t been older nominees for a long time.

Bernie also shouldn’t run because frankly, his policy is weak. He’s been great at moving the conversation leftward, but his policy positions are too progressive to be realistic. Whenever questioned he has no way of actually getting any of them through. A more nuanced approach with some hope of getting through the Senate should be the go.

I’m not sure where my preferences lie yet. It feels like a lot of the ‘best’ nominees are either too old, too poor at campaigning (looking at you Warren), or a bit too centrist (Kamella Harris, Beto). Not that I get a vote or any influence of course!

.

I do think though that the Dem nominees are missing a trick. While they’re going progressive and pushing enhanced medicare et al, removing the tax cuts, why not go all in on the progressive side? Simply promise to increase the Social Security rate, funded through the removal of the tax cuts. The biggest voting block are old white people. Who is most reliant on Social Security - old white non-college educated people. In one move you can make a thrust to the very heart of the Republican voting base. And based on what I’ve read those people are living on, boy do they need an increase in the SS rate. Especially women.

The best bit is that it will all be spent so it will be a direct stimulus to the economy. Far better than the stupid Trump tax cuts.

But, but, trickle-down economics is totally a legit thing, right?

You talk some absolute rubbish in this thread. Bernie’s policy is weak

Medicare 4 All is wanted by 85% of Democrats and 52% of Republicans. What the Democrats should be doing is signing a Medicare For All (Universal Healthcare) through Congress now that they control it and let the Republicans shoot it down in the Senate - that way, it’s on THEM. Medicare For All becomes the cornerstone of the 2020 campaign.

You’re wrong on the biggest voting bloc - it’s by far people who don’t vote, who happen to mostly be millennials, a group where Sanders commands significant influence.

More than likely republicans still control the senate after the next election.

So Medicare for all is a pipe dream and only an election slogan.

How do the Dems get it through?

A bit rich after just claiming the dems would rather Trump than one of their own progressives. And a little bit aggressive non?

MEDICARE = Socialism.

Socialism, facism, communism. All the isms are bad. Therefore Medicare is bad.

What about botulism? Makes your lips poutier, and you’ll certainly lose some weight if you get the good stuff.

You won’t get the good stuff if you’re paying for it through Medicare, coz Medicare is bad.

The open Senate races in 2020 will present a challenge for the GOP, in the way the 2018 races did for the Dems.

Unlikely the Dems will take enough senate seats in 2020 to gain control. 20 Republicans vs 12 Dems up for grabs, but the Republicans are defending very red states. At first glance only 1 dem and 3 Republican seats are realistically in play.

The Dems need to take 4 seats to gain control. If they don’t, they will lose the next seat on the Supreme Court.

The Dems came within a poofteenth of winning governorships in Georgia and Texas last Nov. Normally I reckon you’d be right, but electorally, I don’t think these are normal times.

Control matters for things you can get through via reconciliation (e.g. tax changes), but is absolutely useless for an major changes which can be filibustered. The Dems might have enough issues getting through tinkered improvements to the ACA, let alone an extension of Medicaid, let alone Medicare for all.

Unless they win the senate AND they’re willing to nuke the filibuster, which is unlikely.

Dumbest c*nt on the planet goes to Sarah Sanders. No mean feat to best Trump.
