hot on the heels of the UAE (yep the UAE) announcing they would be sending a probe to Mars, NASA set a firm time line for the first manned mission to Mars.
I knew all it would take was an Arab nation to get into space before the yanks actually started pouring money into NASA again.
If they actually want to land a person(s) on Mars, its still a one way trip scenario. Which obviously means needing a habitable base of some type. Its a fascinating idea, but the cost will be extraordinary.
It's been on the cards for a while. I doubt the UAE sending a probe has anything to do with it. Pretty sure you're overplaying the race card again.
Totally.
I do like though that there is some symmetry between the Curiosity rover sending photos back of Earth from Mars and the announcement of a mission there, same thing happened (though manned) with Earthrise.

All the rovers have done it. Curiosity isn’t the first ones either.
Its strange after years of going we wont spend the money on manned missions probes can do just as good a work, they suddenly go, no, we are going to put a man there, its probably nothing to do with the UAE but might be because Musk or Branson might get there first?

Space x reckon the have the tech to return a person, so do NASA, there are heaps of vids on YouTube how they plan to do it
The returning is an interesting proposition. From a practicality perspective it is a pain in the backside. Would be much easier as a one way mission. I guess ethically it would be hard to make an argument. Needs more Bruce Willis.

Not hard to return someone from a soundstage in Burbank>
