Mason and Max - gridiron men

Corner Back. Punt and Kick returner, 19 TDs.
Occasionally used offensively as a WR or running back, a much more modest 3 TDs
Baseball was a side-line, but still played 9 years in the big-leagues. Stole a mountain of bases.
Lived up to his nick-name of “prime-time”.

Might have been one of the last that played both significant NFL and Big-league Baseball at the same time. Memory tells me there was someone obscure that was a backup QB and played a few major league games since.

Can only think of Bo Jackson as the other. But I don’t think he did both at the same time as Dieon Sanders did.
Charlie Ward was drafted in NBA and NFL. But he stuck with basketball.
I can’t think of many that did two professional sports at the same time.

Please come home SOF

Why would either of them bother?
Both are enjoying being elite sportsmen and both their parents support their decision to go away from AFL.
I’m fine with them being happy doing what they are doing. They obviously didn’t enjoy playing footy as much and have found what something they prefer doing.

Fair enough

I understand the need to have sons of a club legend following in their parents footsteps.
But it can also be a major burden on them. Especially as they go through their junior years between 14 and 18.
They have expectations heaped on them by many sources and whilst they were naturally talented footballers (just like their old man), the fun and enjoyment probably wasn’t there any more.

Yes agree just a pipe dream, actually thought it was the best thing for them atm seeking abroad activities , but you know time goes on things change.

So how old are they now ?

They get an education and experience while trying to make it in an elite sport.

Worst case they come back here and we put then on the Cat B rookie list once they are stronger post 21 years old.

Sounds like an ideal plan for them

The Fletcher sons are 20 / 21 for memory.
They’ve been in USA since just before covid for memory and got there on a scholarship.
One of them almost missed out on tryouts, but got there and because the guy who got a scholarship had a change of mind, one of Fletch’s kids got it.

I don’t think they’ll come back for AFL footy. Most likely the lower levels.

I vaguely remember reading about a guy in the 90s who won the Heisman as a QB, was drafted by a MLB team, but ended up in the NBA. Was that Ward?

Interestingly, he didn’t get drafted by the NFL.

Kyler Murray, though, was a 1st round NFL (1st pick) and MLB pick (9th pick).
The first ever player drafted by two sports in the first round.

Bo Jackson was a standout two sport player - an all-star in both.
Only 7 players since 1970 have played 2 sports (70 all time). Sanders and Jackson are the clear standouts of those 7. Brian Jordan is the only other notable (MLB all-star and WS player).

I can’t recall if he was in with a chance of being in MLB.
He was a QB. Not sure he was good enough for Heisman.

I saw Charlie Ward play for FSU against Wake Forrest in Winston Salem on a snowy night I think in 1994. Tim Duncan played in that game for Wake Forrest. He was great and had a 20 year career at San Antonio…Both teams didn’t make the ACC playoffs that year.
UNC and Duke were the standouts

Mate of mine was with ProKick, didn’t get to the NFL, and ended up punting in the Canadian Football League for a few teams. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Fletcher’s heading up there if they don’t get to the NFL.

Mason has shown more than enough to be a serious NFL prospect. Haven’t seen enough of Max

What’s the go with College football conferences? Are the Fletcher’s playing in good conferences?

The are both playing in Power 5 conferences (5 best conferences)

Max is in the SEC probably the strongest conference

Mason in the the Big12 which at the top end of the Power 5.

The SEC is the one with Alabama, Georgia, LSU in it, so, yes. They’re getting Oklahoma and Texas next year.

The Big XII is still one of the better ones although the geographic footprint is now so bizarre that I can’t keep track of it anymore.

It will be even more fun when two teams on the Pacific coast join the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Pac 12 implosion has really been something. I don’t recognize the landscape anymore.

There is a ProKick session that runs 3 times a week at the local park near me. Was speaking to the bloke in charge, told me was $100 a session and is at least 50 guys there every time

Good moneymaking scheme as 99% of the guys that train will go nowhere
