- I am not sure Martin running off half back is the right position for him. He seems much more comfortable on the wing. I hope the coaches don’t wait too long before they re-assess his role.
- IMO, moving Caldwell off Heeney in the last quarter was a strategic mistake.
- We really need Ridley down back asap. We miss him more than Redman I suspect.
- I’m not sure McKay is the answer but it’s hard to tell from just TV coverage.
- I think they have finally got the right position for Cox, but he will take some time.
- 2MP/Langford are starting to duplicate the famous Lloyd/Lucas partnership. This is a great set up
- Draper just adds another dimension to this team.
- Remember last year when the focus was on how are we going to kick goals, it’s odd now, the focus is on a leaky backline.
- Other teams need to know they have played Essendon, so I like the harder team approach.
To me the difference between the two sides was the kicking skills. All the Sydney team seemed to be elite by foot. And Essendon,
well Merrett and possibly Martin.
This seems to be a problem with the drafting. In todays game elite kicking skills are so neccessary. We dont seem to put enough emphasis on this with our drafting.
I hope we go even harder at them the next time when we play them at home in August.
The best thing Peter Wright could have done last night would have been to run through another one of their players as soon as he had a chance.
I’d love to see Papley on the cart - fuckinlittle sook.
2MP was a moneyball bargain so no complaints.
But gee whiz we need Caddy to be the next Jack Reiwoldt.
Why do you hate Caddy so much?
Throw the cheque book at Kinnear Beatson
Here’s why, 347/787
Sorry, was just tongue in cheek given Riewoldt often played like a petulant child.
Obviously a really good player though.
Essendon is so broken that we’d probably make Beatson do a 3 year apprenticeship under Dodoro
I hear ya
Haha
Have Beaston mentoring Rosa then boot out RFK and Dodoro
mayble it is the cattle that is the issue
Just banana peel under a Band-Aid.
Or just get them frozen off.
Still, lloydy knows best.
All this tak about a defensive mindset is covering up the big issue …
Too many times our forward entries go to the wrong spot
We kick to 3 on 1 even 4 on 1 and turn it over while you guessed our players are elsewhere .
We can’t play a forward half because of who we play in the forward line
Oh and we don’t mark the ball in Our forward 50 due to the above
I like the phsycallity clearance but putrid going forward
Or just give Essendon the Sydney academy.
Let’s see how good we are then?
Worst example was Gresham kicking to Langers with 3 on him in a pack, he had no chance, it meant other players had to be better options.
The milk from the stem of a fig. Apply it for 3 days. Works every time, like magic
Improvements I’ve noticed this year:
- after about 10 years, we finally have size around the ball to compete in finals (if we make it). The Scott brothers like their teams to be big bodied.
- our forward line scores pretty easily.
- our aggression has gone up.
- we have so much more list depth.
- our ball movement is pretty good.
Issues:
- we get scored against too easily, team defence is still an issue 15 years on and there has never been a top 4 team that isn’t elite at this. We will never be good until we address this issue.
- we lack speed and ball use off half back.
- we lack good small forwards adding manic f50 pressure. This is one of the main reasons bullet point one is still an issue.
So overall some good improvements in long standing areas of size and depth, but the most important one being team defence, appears to still be a major problem, that seems almost impossible to address at the EFC.
This, we have been a meek soft side for far too long. Opposition try and rough us up and we collapse.
Last night we gave it back in spades
Loving the new aggressive side of this team. If we cop a few suspensions from it- so be it
