Match review vs Fark Carlton - same old crap

Watching first half of first qtr

It’s so simple no forwardline structure.

Kick it in hope like the Essendon of old.

Also too Tippa shortest bloke on the park, no brains no brains

Also locked big bodied midfielder it was so evident

He is the only forward who seems to have any idea where the kick is going, even when we heave it long and high as we do. Surely Townsend or Stringer or someone else can get under those kicks.
Nonetheless, getting under a long high ball is not exactly a great improvement. Maybe a few leads, some movement, any movement, to give the kicker an option other than the long high kick, would be nice.
But no, the long high ball with Tippa the only one to know where it might go, seems to be what happens by default.

With saad well held for most of the night, we didn’t look dangerous at all coming out of the backline. Very stop start, a lot of standing around and waiting for other players to move and show work rate off the ball

Output was still down on his usual.

Stats wise carlton destroyed us.

Yup. Still wasn’t “hardly sighted”. He was regularly sighted and highly ineffective.

Yeah so why didn’t we move a different player onto betts and play saad uo the ground?

Can think of a very quiet small forward in our side who broke into our side in the backline that might have worked…

You know you don’t need to this, we’re all here for you

Wouldn’t playing a true tagger also rob us of drive of our own?

club is all over hte place trying to play richmond style no forward strucutre just complete retardation/clown club.

Look at Richmond this year. I fear the comp has cracked the Richmond code and we’re late to the party, again

What’s Richmond’s weights coach up to?

You never win flags by copying another team.

Yep.

Answer me this: has any team in the past ten years or so won a flag by imitating the style of another team that’s won the flag?

I can’t think of one. What tends to happen is that teams who win a flag come up with their own style, not just copy another team’s style (because as you correctly point out - once you do that, the other teams will have figured out how to play against it)

Only the first half of first qtr

I couldn’t bare anymore of that rubbish

They also weren’t switched on

We gonna get belted next week

Not much to add to what has been written.
The selection policy absolutely staggers me. It was obvious in the first two matches that there is a glaring lack of height on the forward line. And without this height, the smalls have to play a role that should not be expected of them. It’s not as if Phillips is a dud. He did quite well in the pre-season games. And TB can ruck only a half. Draper would need some match play in the scratch matches.

Actually, I think the backline overall is holding its own. This would suggest the game plan for defence is not too bad.

I am convinced that the covid disruption is a disaster and did cost them the game. It has derailed their season, imo, because later they will have to play 3 games in perhaps 11 days. So not only did it potentially cost them this match, but could cost them another one. And last time they had to play 3 games in 11 or 12 days, they lost a series of matches after it, till they recovered. Also they weren’t able to have a scratch match last weekend, so that many haven’t had enough match play to stake their claims.

Melbourne were able to have an intra club match last Sunday, so they didn’t suffer the way Essendon did. I am actually cutting them a lot of slack. But too many players have played poorly two weeks in a row, and some must be dropped.

And yes, for goodness sake, why didn’t they put Parish into the midfield. Crazy.

They could have been four goals behind. And that was about the difference in the general play. But such a shame Townsend fell just short. To have snatched a win would have been a big boost.

One plus has been their accuracy. Perhaps lack of a crowd has made a difference, although apparently it hasn’t overall. But the other difference is that many of their set shots are more in front of goal than from the boundary line.

They’ll be smashed on Friday, I expect.

Use of “retard” (or variants) in anything other than a purely medical sense is an excellent way to get banned.

Doing it twice in a day certainly gets you a decent chunk of time.

During Townsend’s kick I don’t understand why Hooker didn’t try to defend the kick through?Instead he may aswell had been spectating in the front row.

I think Collingwood in 2010 is as close as you’ll get. I think they took the Saints forward press model and tweaked it a bit too suit them.

I don’t think West Coasts game is that far removed from Tiger either. Certainly some similarities.
