Matt Rosa - the new list boss man

A cautious yes on that statement. Feel like time will tell on Robey but having said that, worth the punt.

feel like we needed to do more during the trade period to have back up picks for Sweid. Like trading Jones or Guelfi for some third rounders

You gotta have buyers.

mmmmm…we dont know that yet. I really hope you’re right, though.

Would have preferred we took dovaston instead of farrow, but overall this bloke is definitely good at swapping picks and putting us in good draft positions.

Also a bit disappointed we didn’t get sweid, was going cheap enough, but understand after taking 3 mids. I feel it could have been a cultural peice connecting with the local Muslim community in our area even more, which can bring in a big fan base off the back of that community. El halwi won’t last much longer and huss might be a rookie pick, so a bit of a missed opportunity with sweid being the highest ranked Islamic background draftee yet.

Sweid sees himself as the high half forward. Which is definitely a role we need.

Strengths are speed and defensive pressure. Essentially replacing Gresham or Hobbs.

I am disappointed we missed him to be honest

It depends who we pick tonight as to whether it’s a disappointment in the end. Rosa and the team probably think we will get a player better for us with the guys left in the draft so I’d trust them

Yep, big watch for the night.

Hopefully land a solid option with our next pick plus add Huss.

Every win makes our draft picks worse.

You do wonder if half of these posters would actually prefer we lost so they can whinge more.

I certainly respect your opinion, but we need to get back to basics. Drafting players that are good, are going to make us better and bring us premiership glory is what is important at the min. We want to be a premiership power house again.

I feel Melbourne are in the same boat as us so I was very surprised they drafted Pickett, thought it was a real stretch, possibly to please Kozzie, but maybe having a player connection is more important than next best talent in their eyes? Its all debatable.

Lets get our house in order first then we can worry about islamic community connections, indigeneous representation, minority group growth etc. Lets also back SEH and hopefully HUSS!

Sweid will punch out a great career at Freo, but clearly we didn’t rate him highly enough.

Yeah overall I agree, just would be a good success story for our academy and really build that bond with that community very tightly, which flows onto supporter base, revenue, more talent coming through from that community in our zone etc. So it’s bigger than just a simple footy decision.

Sweid is the one that is a leader. It’s a strange pick for Freo actually, i already think their midfield is too small.

We could have easily got Sweid by not doing the swap with Carlton last night.

I think reality is Sweid just doesn’t suit our list and list spots are tight this year. We already have too many undersized mids.

I think it was a mature decision to not take him.

or by trading a future pick for a pick this year.

The team definitely have a strategy and it probably didn’t fit the plan to trade to get sweid given the other players available

The proof of the pudding will be in the eating, however you can’t help not liking he’s style. Consolidated picks to get the guys we wanted, backed his intel to let Sharp slide past Melbourne. Even deciding not to bid on a well regarded academy player shows some fortitude and conviction.

We added size around the ball and competitiveness, midfield goals, and an elite kick that will help our ball movement. I really hope we grab at least one small forward tonight. I’d be happy to take Huss and another if possible.

It’s worth remembering we went into last years trade period a second round pick down as we’d used it to acquire caddy. So across the 24 and 25 drafts we only had two first round picks and one second round pick.

Rosa has expanded that short hand to 4 first round picks and 3 second round picks and only gave up Draper to assist. So we’ve taken 2 extra firsts and 2 extra seconds and only gave up Draper that’s huge. We’ve massively strengthened our draft hand and increased the talent on the last just by being crafty. The 4 first have been genuinely high picks too all within pick 13, non of this pick 22 first round picks that aren’t really first round picks.

I’m not sold on some of the recontracting decisions this year, but the draft strategy of the past two years has been exceptional.

Just an unfortunate victim of circumstance.

The option to trade with Carlton didn’t open up until Carlton got the intel that the Eagles were planning the early bid for Dean at 3. At that point, that trade was a no brainer, but put Sweid in jeopardy. It sounds like we tried to trade our 2027 third for some extra draft capital to match but didn’t have any takers, and we didn’t want to trade our 2026 second for fear of missing out on Justice.

Going into deficit next year was never really an option.

I completely agree with you that matching on our NGAs has extra value through developing community ties, but in this case we couldn’t work out a way to get it done.

Definitely

Yeah agree, I wasn’t even that keen on sweid due to his size as he wouldn’t get much of a go behind the 3 guys they brought in, just yeah something sits a bit uncomfortable about it from an overall club/ community perspective, as I think it could have had some real background benefits in that space.

Dovaston came across as a bit of a d ick. So did Taylor who needed to remark about BOG at the after party.

Farrow has huge ceiling
