Wouldn’t have a clue what they sold in the Members.
But culinary break throughs, and the rise of nouvelle cuisine, did lead to Chiko Rolls being sold at the scoreboard “4 cans of VB thanks mate limit” venue in the late ‘70s, early ‘80s.
I know because a certain level of inebriation led me to purchase one once. Think they’d sold out of pies.
And make it’s reacquaintance later that evening.
A taste I still haven’t forgotten.
Unlike which game it was actually at, which is lost in the mists of time.
Not Chikos, but they used to sell a magnificent spring roll in a little stand at the Raleigh St end of the Reynolds Stand. As good as any I’ve ever had.
Dad used to take me and a mate every week. He was an Essendonian, and we’d arrive at the start of the ressies. He’d sit with the other coterie members and I’d sit in another section allocated for the kids of coterie club members. After getting there at around 11, I wouldn’t see him till well after the game till 8 hours, when he’d drive us back to Franga with a skin full.
I remember going into the game rooms after a win and seeing my heroes close up, most of them starkers. Some of them were so gracious with their time and seemed larger than life. In particular I remember Sheeds, Simon Madden and TD being super friendly. That they’d take the time to talk to someone like me left an impression.
Just started going through this thread… loving it.
Not to take away from the Windy Hill memories aspect, but the ground I grew up playing footy and cricket on in Tallangatta had (and maybe still has) Merri Creek soil in the centre for the cricket wicket. Merri Creek mud definitely has a unique stench.
And trying to wash the sticky black ■■■■ off in the showers after a game of footy was absolute nails. Always wear your socks up kids. Dried mud in your leg hairs is bad times.
Anyway - apologies for the diversion!
If it dried up after a few sunny days, it was almost like shards of glass.
Oh man - my legs used to get scratched to bits on that stuff.
