Michael Long deserves a Knighthood - got a statue, AFL Life Membership and an OAM for now

That’s a long life membership!

EFC could have called the Hangar the Long Hangar.
Shame that Fitzpatrick was made a Life member at the same time.

I can’t access the Herald Sun news article on the great mans illness. Is Michael ok?

I read a bit of the article while waiting for my coffee. He went into hospital for surgery and ended up with blood poisoning. Reported to be on the improve now thankfully but the experts warned against travelling to Melbourne for the game last night.

Was my favorite player growing up, and used to wear #13 whenever I could. Glad to hear he is getting better!

Glad to hear he’s on the mend. Phew! Saw words like ‘Long’ ‘Deadly’ and ‘Illness’ on the screen late last night and was really worried.

As an aside, should’ve had a Brownlow, and an extra 120 games on his resume if it wasn’t for injury. Only played 17 games in three seasons after finishing runner-up in the Brownlow in '95. Not to mention missing ALL of '94 also. As we all know he was in blistering form late in 93 - who knows what would’ve become of his career if he’d played right through that 94-97 period.

Is truly one of our club’s greats on many different levels.
Well done on the club to acknowledge him in this way.

glorious

I have nothing to add, I’m just angry I missed the period of blitz history where we had a user called “Lord_Whoppersausage”.

What is the name that is supposedly a swear?[quote=“Windy_Dill, post:36, topic:1122, full:true”]
There needs to be something done to commemorate the game where our centre line read “Kickett Long ■■■■”.

I’d like to point out that Australians no longer get recognised under the Imperial awards system. And since everyone recognised that Tony’s decision to re-introduce Knights and Dames to the Australian honours and awards system (and subsequently award one to Prince Phillip) was a totally bone-head move despised by nearly the entire nation, there is no practical way for any Australian to receive a knighthood.

So it’s a nice sentiment and all, but it’s not going to happen. I would say he is an extremely likely candidate for an Order of Australia at some point.

d!ck.

Looks like he’s lost some weight.

You mean “Sir Prince Phillip”.

That’s fantastic.
Also good to see Longy was well enough to attend after recent health problems.

Not because it’s Essendon but that statue is amazing, capturing the essence of the man in all facets of his life. Wow!
