Number of players taken in MSD:
2021 = 23
2022 = 17
2023 = 13
2024 = 19
Not that many…and now we’re slipping in the draft order…I’m going to guesstimate that we’ll only use 1-2 picks.

I think 1-2 from outside EFC.
But also its an opportunity to grab 1-2 guys from our VFL side for 6 months.
Foley/Smartt/Hoare/Nyko/Hatley/O’Neill etc
I’d say O’Neill & Hatley unlikely as we have good midfield depth now and they have been on AFL lists before.
Would be a nice reward IMO if we chose at least one internally given the space we have.
Do players nominate for the MSD? I get supporters and clubs are upset that they are losing their best players mid season but if they are nominating on their own accord they are clearly looking to go to the next level.
I get the impact it has on clubs, but these players have dreams of playing AFL, not state league footy.
Hello “localbomber”. Since you asked so nicely:
My comment was more aimed at it being a poor article than a criticism of Vozzo who seems a solid enough operator. Having said that, having read the article about our list management strategy, I’m not particularly clear on what our list management strategy is.
We want to target top tier players who fill needs who are younger than 28? Cool. There is not a club in the land who wouldn’t say similar (maybe Collingwood). What are the list needs?
We want players who fit in culturally. Ok, I’m sure every club would say that. What is the culture we are trying to build?
It takes time but not 8 years. Ok, what is your expectation on when we should be contending?
Hard to get a read of what any of that actually means but there is a conspicuous absence of the word “rebuild”. And so, again, it all feels like we are having a bob each way which has been the same story for 20 years. Won’t say we are rebuilding but not in a position to contend any time soon. No apparent conviction in anything we do.
At least he didn’t mention “standards”. Shudder.
Already have him on our list. His name is Zach Reid
Is that meant to be a good thing??? Finish around 10th to 12th again???
Hes travelling europe for 3 months
Made of glass, no thanks. Never played more than 7 or 8 games in a season at best
This isn’t the lid off thread.
Its being realistic.
11 wins is Brad’s sweet spot.
*2012 North played GWS & Gold coast twice
Is Sellers from our VFL squad considered an option? No idea how old he is, but he’s got some nice attributes.
Well he did play a couple of games for North, so Brad’s probably interested.
He’s been alright at VFL level. Some decent games and some quiet ones. Looks like he did pretty well for North’s VFL team during his time there.
Only 22 so age isn’t an issue, though 193cm key tall is obviously on the lower end.
I don’t quite see him taking the step up. North has been screaming out for a second key forward and cut him.
But I’m all in on the Gerreyn train.
Sellers is not AFL standard. Hard no.
I find it really hard to recognise what vfl players are only good vfl players and won’t succeed at afl level and which ones can make the step up. Age is your first prerequisite, but youth doesn’t always mean the player will get a lot better. Sellers, for example, is a better player than Gerryne right now; hopefully Gerryne will go straight past him in a year or two. But is Nguyen (who I really like) a better prospect than Foley? Smart, on his day (and he is hot and cold) looks better than Davey. Hoare at times has looked comparable to Hayes. I sometimes feel sorry for guys like these who weren’t drafted at 18, and have to perform at a much higher level in the vfl than young draftees to get noticed.
For me a large part of it is attributes, rather than just flat out performance.
Gerreyn for example - His athletic profile for his size is pretty ridiculous. Super mobile which will definitely help at the next level.
Sellars on the other hand looks fairly average to me, that combined with his average height counts against him.
Nguyen I think will make it just on pure determination. That kid goes. I’d still like to see Foley given a shot though.
At the end of the day though there’s still a fair amount of guesswork. Some players just play better at AFL level.
I agree with your feelings around blokes overlooked at 18, but I’d still say theyre better off now than they were for a longtime.
We’re now at a point that we need a tallish defender - Hoare
We need a ruck…preferably one who can hold up an end to cover Goldy…yet still give Vigo a run at an opportune time.
Add a medium and a tall forward. Medium mightn’t be needed since Guelfi’s back.
Lock down small defender too.
I’d agree with @EssendonPride1 that attributes is a big factor. On some of the players you’ve mentioned:
That all said, Hoare would have to be a chance with Ridley & Hayes out.
I hope we are looking beyond our own VFL program (I’m sure we are) as it’s not a particularly good one.
Smart is not an AFL player. He’ll make Menzie look good.
Sellers is undersized and doesn’t particularly make up for it with anything.
Hoare … meh.
The only one I’d potentially look at is Nyko because he has an explosiveness that I think could translate well to AFL. But there are still likely better options elsewhere.
