Mid Season Draft 2025

You said ruckman are overrated which is not true

And then you didn’t read any other points?

The season is a write season I agree but we still need a ruck man wether that be Crossley or some one else

Enlighten me on what we saw

Goldy got beat and our mids couldn’t get their hands on the ball

Goldstein beat English comprehensively in hit outs.

English towelled Goldstein up around the ground.

Thankfully there’s a whole heap of State League Ruckmen who will beat Tim English and all the other gun AFL Ruckmen……….

That’s why we need a ruck who can compete around ground like playing with a man short having Goldstien

We are not going to get a state league ruckman capable of matching someone like Tim English around the ground.

They’d be AFL listed already.

I’m not against getting a ruckman as MSD pick. But my hopes for them would be really low.

We don’t need them to beat Tim English or any of the best rucks they just need to compete around the ground Goldy is useless after a hit out

Goldy absolutely smacked English in hitouts our problem was the mid fields efforts.

Wright and McKay playing ruck is not ideal.

It increases the workload for Caddy and Reid.

If Vigo is given is forced to play any more than a few games, it won’t be good for his development and will force gerreyne to leave the forward line also undesirable.

A short term ruckman is the most obvious pick.

Goldstein is not gonna be playing next year, he can barely play now and we aren’t half through the season.

If/when he breaks down and physically can’t play, we will be forced to play another guy in there and every option we currently have is going to have a negative impact on our young developing talls.

We will need an AFL depth ruckman next year, why not trial someone for the next 6 months before picking someone at the end of the year.

Elite ruckman are 100% overrated.

Grundy, Gawn, Xerri, Marshall, Jackson, Nank are the best ruckman in the competition and their team’s success or failure is independent to their performance.

Collingwood has Cameron and Cox, Geelong has Stanley and Blitz, the lions have OMack and he didn’t even play in the GF, bullies have English, giants have briggs, Crows have O’Brien, suns have Witts and moyle, hawks have meek.

They are all good role players but not in that top echelon of ruckman that I would consider elite or that bring a point of difference to their midfield. Imo you need a competent and competitive ruckman who won’t be embarrassed and or who will contribute in other ways, you don’t need elite in order to have have a finals chance.

The thought of Ben McKay playing ruck is comical. He’d be gassed after about 5 minutes. And for a guy of his size he’s also incredibly soft which isn’t ideal for a ruck role where you want to be a physical presence.

Goldy must be delisted end of this season. Getting a back up ruckman in the draft is not a good option. We need to bring in someone mature age.

Now we aren’t going to trade for one with our earlier picks for a backup. So basically whoever we get in the mid-season draft, we should get them for 18 months, if the best one available nominates those terms.

Dude our mids need to smarten up & get to the fall of the ball. A competing ruckman is good but mids still need to be 1st at the drop of the ball to make a clearance. Our mids need to try & learn how to feed off both ruckmen.

Yes - Goldy won the hitouts last week but he was an absolute liability around the ground. At every ruck contest the Doggies were essentially plus one starting their easy ball movement with a handpass out the back or someone accelerating away from the congestion. Any potential MSD pick on a ruckman must address that otherwise don’t bother.

Zach Reid though.
205cm ruckman with elite disposal.

who can push back into defence and intercept or push forward and be a very tough matchup forward.

I kind of hope Goldstein gets injured so we get to see it.

Reid would be amazing around the ground.

This might be left field but I like the idea of Goldy rucking in VFL to develop emerging midfielders.
Give them good service at CB to develop quick clearance.
Maybe this is best outcome? Young midfielders learning from a master ruckman.
No it doesn’t help AFL ruck situation this year but I think take the medicine and improvise for this year.
1 step backwards 2 steps forward?
AFL ruck situation can be addressed at the end of the season.

Agreed.

But there is a scenario where we have no rucks.
