Middle East Discussion

When communism ended in Russia, more than a million Russians immigrated to Israel which had a population of around 7 million at the time.
So they are a massive part of society.

Was it not until the eighties when Russian Jews were allowed to emigrate ?

Started around 1990

I just remember living in Brussels in the eighties when there was an influx of Russian Jewry, possibly in transition to Israel. Belgium and Brussels had a small established and fairly affluent Jewish community. Jewish aid groups looked after them, but they had huge problems in adjusting from what they considered to be a more welfare state they had left behind and made huge demands on the aid groups.

Many came to Israel because they were given almost free housing and a host of other benefits. They pretty much left Russia with the clothes on their backs,
After the initial honeymoon some left but integration was and remains a challenge due to cultural, language and professional issues. e.g. medical degrees were not all up to Western standards.
But the Russian immigration was a massive boost to the science and technology sector and is a lot of why Israel is a tech and medical powerhouse.

Interesting. Thank you

David Attenborough did not say this.

Yeah. Didn’t pass the sniff test. You posted that a split second before I could.

Ironically, if they hadn’t gone with the harvesting kids and injecting prisoners thing, probably wouldn’t have triggered my suspicions.

Well, the other bit that set off my bullshit radar was the stuff about crocodiles.

Attenborough is a naturalist, he wouldn’t label a crocodile as ‘cruel’.

Thank you for checking this out for me, @Humble_Minion. I think it might be best if my post above and the four following it were removed !! @Mendozaaaa.

He is not done yet and will probably be back.

He’s dead but I still see Ariel Sharon returning at some point.

Who was the dude with the eyepatch? Israeli hero in the Six-Day War.

He visited Melbourne in the mid-70s and the reception was in our street (Mark Leibler lives there and Mark’s brother Isi was the #1 man in the Melbourne Jewish community at the time).

Anyhow, I’m coming home after having a couple of refreshing sherbets, and a cop stops me from coming in the street.

And that day, the Leiblers’ next door neighbours were going to get their colour TV antenna installed and the installer was Lebanese. Sorry, boys, you’ll have to wait.

Kosher steak, I hope.

Shaky coalition Unlikely to hold together?

Netanyahu is as cunning as a rat and he will do a deal with the devil to keep power. As soon as he has lost control, they will get him into Court and he is toast. He is never to be under-estimated.

And this bloke who is trying to replace him will cause a real war in the region. He will try to takeover all of Gaza and the West Bank and force Palestinians out.
