Midfield Woes: Instant fix

Yeah a no /yes design maybe. Two factors here

  1. was keeping Myers and Kelly
  2. and two a change is as good as a holiday and relishing a change of clubs and not being so much in the spotlight

I understand the salary cap mate. It was just a smart a#se comment by me towards these tin rattlers clubs. These clubs and supporters fa#ken annoy me, in how they boast their clubs are great.

If only there were no other clubs.

but there are and more than ever, keep the faith, if we can keep solidarity this year, we will be ready next.

That’s not entirely true. There are still plenty of deals done with players with third party financial arrangements. Warren Buffets fortune would provide
a range of ‘other’ opportunities when attracting and keeping star players.

Yeah. Direct financial arrangements would mostly be covered by the ASA, but networking, investment opportunities, etc are definitely something that clubs can use to differentiate themselves. Just not officially.

If we had Buffett level cash You could start a - separate to the club - players retirement fund which hands out lifetime pensions to Essendon players based on their games played for the club.

So sure you can take the 9 mill over 9 years at the Roos, but how about 400k pension for the rest of you life should you take a shittier deal and play at Essendon.

As long as it is completely separate from the club, funded and payed outside the AFL they couldn’t do ■■■■ about it.

We’re getting a bit far afield, but if a club did something that brazen, the AFL would make a disrepute ruling and penalise them into the dirt.

Agreed but just for the record:

We did not “lose” them.

They were effectively stolen from us by the AFL/Vlad/Gill in their desperation to have a scapegoat that ended up in the Sorry Saga.

That the Saga caused them to leave was one thing. That the AFL hierarchy did nothing to see that we got anywhere even remotely near equitable terms for a player like Ryder just makes things even worse and makes those ( contemptible arseholes ) even worse in my eyes.

OH NOES WILL!!!

GWS are giving Harry Perryman a go in front of you… can you believe it.

Mate, seriously, the Essendon Football Club is where you are meant to be. Just lock it in.

What about Rocky? At his best he is an absolute gun. Would really compliment our midfield and a good age for our list profile.

Setterfield is still out injured for another 5-7wks IIRC after serious ankle injury

Good for us if he isn’t playing however

He’d be perfect

Whoa Whoa Whoa Speedy… whose side are you on mate.

Brisbane midfielder Tom Rockliff will decide his future in the back half of the season JAY CLARK, Herald Sun May 17, 2017 7:00pm Subscriber only BRISBANE Lions vice-captain Tom Rockliff will decide his future in the back half of the season after bouncing back from the most challenging year of his career.

The reinvigorated ball winner is one of this year’s most intriguing free-agency prospects, and neither Brisbane nor Rockliff is in a rush to finalise a new deal.

The out-of-contract tough nut was at the crossroads last season amid a fallout with then coach Justin Leppitsch but has rediscovered his All-Australian form under new coach Chris Fagan.

Rockliff, 27, is the AFL’s top clearance winner this year, averaging 10 a game, and is rated elite for disposals (average 30), tackles (eight), contested possessions (15) andd SuperCoach points (123).

His sharply improved form is the second biggest spike recorded by Champion Data this season, behind only Gary Ablett.

Fagan has lauded Rockliff’s attitude and leadership after some “uncomfortable conversations” late last year, when the new coach told Rockliff “all of the things I’d heard about him”.

Rockliff subsequently lost the captaincy to Dayne Beams but has shown total commitment to the Lions’ cause so far this season and is one of the frontrunners for the best-and-fairest award.

Fagan is one of the keys to helping keep Rockliff at the club, but the Lions could be rewarded with a first or second-round compensation pick if the Victorian leaves as a free agent.

Brisbane is bottom of the ladder, meaning first-round compensation could net it pick No. 2, but only if Rockliff is paid more than about $700,000 at a new club.

A lesser salary would trigger a second-round compensation pick — No. 19 on current standings.

However, the Lions may be reluctant to lose another top-end talent after a string of departures in recent years, including Pearce Hanley (Gold Coast), Elliot Yeo and Jack Redden (West Coast), Sam Docherty (Carlton), Jared Polec (Port Adelaide) and Billy Longer (StKilda)

The Lions’ 2015 No. 2 draft pick Josh Schache, 19, is also considering a move back home to Victoria (he hails from Benalla).

Collingwood showed interest in Rockliff last season but instead opted for Fremantle utility Chris Mayne, who is languishing in its VFL team.

Rockliff dislocated his left shoulder in the loss to Hawthorn on Saturday. He could return for Sunday week’s match against Collingwood at the MCG, or the Round 12 match against Fremantle at the Gabba after the Lions’ bye.

You’d have to think Lions would want him to go.

Pick 1&2, plus wanting 2 first rounders for Schache would give them scope to address quite a few things. They will not be near finals for next 3-4yrs.

This years draft is meant to have strong kpp so they can replace Schache (albeit lose 2yrs of development) and also have strong hand for trades.

Rockliff could directly replace Watson. However could someone who we already have Craig Bird offer performance wise a slightly lesser version of Rockliff? And we can spend the cash elsewhere.

I would not know Chris Fagan if I picked him outta my nose.
