I believe tidal is better $$ support for artists. With only bare research I think there is also a few others that are better for the artist than Spotify however the number of Spotify users probably generates more money gross.
Tidal is doing a month free trial and you should notice the difference in sound quality. Thereās not a song I havenāt been able to find thatās on Spotify, Iāve actually found more recordings especially live albums on Tidal. I have been playing albums that are in Dolby atmos and hi res (FLAC 24 bit/48 hertz and MQA). Iām no expert but I was pretty amazed listening on both headphones and speakers to things like tusk - Fleetwood Mac and pink Floyd for example.
Whats it like for discovering new music?
(Tidal)
Too early to say. Only today did it provide me 8 āmy mixesā similar to Spotify. These have songs in genre of the mix Iām not familiar with so Iāll eventually listen to them. Iād say itās maybe 50 song per mix 25% songs Iāve played, 50% songs from an artist Iāve listened to and 25% new.
Tidal made playlists are pretty good, Iād say more deep cuts or songs Iām not familiar with. I say that only because I feel Spotify playlists got a bit lazy or worked me out and it was becoming rarer and rarer to find a song I liked thatās new to me. It also seemed to keep selecting the same songs Iād skip.
Maybe tidal algorithm will work me out and do the same but too early to tell.
The latest album from Nick Barker, Exoskeleton, has some ripper tunes. In particular Clowntown, Hand in the Lake and this, the title track
A wild collage of time signature and tempo changes, just a little too barmy to follow in the footsteps of Sich Offnenā¦
From a band whoās released a lot of very good, well-written, jangly and eminently hummable tunes, this might just be the best of themā¦

I have specific complaints about Spotify, particularly their end of year Wrappeds which are just weird and not right.
But generally itās excellent.
Would take a lot to make me switch.
If I want high quality Brothers In Arms, I have the vinyl.
And Apple will never be forgiven for trying to own my music collection. Ever.
I have no need for Spotify.
I have my collection.
I have my phone.
I have my memory cards.
I have my flash drives.
These contain all the music Iāll ever need, in whatever quality I chooseā¦
Spotify has no care for quality control.
Spotify has no interest in the artists.
Spotify screws the artists. Pays them a pittance, and even then with an air of ābe grateful for what you get, you lowly pissantsā.
Apple will never be forgiven for a) wiping my music collection several times over all because that one farking do not sync box somehow got unticked, b) foisting that woeful U2 album on me.
Fark Apple and, especially, fark Spotify.
Fully with you on a).
And I know Spotify are terrible for artists. I feel bad about that.
I feel bad about the whole industry at the moment.
Iād Love to be able to pop down the street and pick up a physical copy of a new song I like for ten bucks.
If I could, I would.
sigh I donāt know how much I paid for the 12ā of Blinding Lights, but it was a shedload more than $10, And I had to wait for it.
The thing is that I have an eight year history with Spotify now. I have personal playlists.
I have all of my end of year top hundreds.
Itās going to take a Lot for me to dump them.
Yes, well that is true too. Record labels are only marginally better (and barely more ethical) than Spotify. With streaming services denying them of income they are crazily gouging consumers for physical product, especially vinyl. The prices are eye-watering right now.
I access my music library via iTunes (but itās also loaded on several portable drives) and have access to Spotify via my daughterās family membership.
I donāt get phased at all by their interest (or lack of) in artistsā¦I just use them as a platforms to listen to music.
