Yes, I want to say this as kindly as possible, but I’m aware.
I think that verse and the previous ties together. I always took the song as the troubles from each generation of the family.
No…I’ve always taken that line as referring to his ability to cause more harm to the DEA or anyone else who comes near…think of the booby traps that the Vietnamese used.
As for family violence…I don’t see how you came to that conclusion.
The verse concerning his grandaddy hints at violence
Now, the revenue man wanted grandaddy bad
Headed up the holler with everything he had
'Fore my time, well, I’ve been told
He never come back from Copperhead Road
There’s no violence in the verse about his father…it hints (strongly) at him coming to a fiery end but I’ve always thought that involved a car crash
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin’ down Copperhead Road
And then the protagonist hints at having PTSD but I can’t see how you take that to mean he is batshit crazy
And now the DEA’s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screamin’ like I’m back over there
I learned a thing or two from Charlie, don’t you know?
You better stay away from Copperhead Road
Swoodley the musical master baiter waiting for Wimm to bite
And for @AnnStBomber when they find out king gizzard just released there 13,737th song.
No baiting…I’m just kindly pointing out to Wim where his theory has gone wrong.
I see it as a public service really.

I’m a huge fan of SBS chill and this is one of the absolute chill bangers that frequents it.
Best of luck with it. Frisson! Loved the way you depicted Kirk’s solo, that was beautiful. Subscribed.
Wrong is a strong word.
It’s my read. Yours may differ.
However, I’m not the only one who thinks John Jr’s death wasn’t an accident.
Also… the car did not catch on fire near copperhead road, but instead when he was on the way to Knoxville. He was probably ran off the road by a cop. So, since the sherrif knows about it he tells the singer’s mother that the father is dead. The Sherriff then goes up Copperhead Road and burns all the whiskey. They either pour out whiskey when they find it or burn it.
Thanks for taking the time to listen. Glad you enjoyed it. Looking forward to sharing more
That’s just supposition…some random’s thought…who said it?
Try this:

Just fan-based comment.
That John Jr is on the way to Knoxville, and the smell of whiskey burning on/near their property, suggests those are two seperate (although obviously in my opinion connected) events.
Did you read the link I provided?
I did.
It doesn’t seem to have anything to say about that verse?
What we need is for Steve Earle to join Blitz so that he can tell us what happens in the song.
I can’t find anything from him about it’s meaning.
I mean…I don’t think the link with the law skips a generation.
I think the police took him out, and came back and burned his still(s).
But hey…it’s okay to read different things.
Get a room and come together in agreement that I was right.
Ooh missus…
