This has been getting into heavy rotation.
I don’t know why I like it so much.
Not only didn’t I know it at the time, I didn’t discover it until this century, so there’s no nostalgia.
It’s not a Great song. I mean, it’s not like you hear this and think…oh, that’s quality.

But there is something warm about it. It feels like a song I should have known.
And it feels like it should have been released waaaay later than 1980. Feels way more like ‘84 (and that’s a massive difference).

I find it quite ridiculous that Squeeze are pretty much known here for two songs only, neither of which is at all representative of their overall catalogue - Cool For Cats (which Chris Difford sings) and Tempted (which Paul Carrack sings). I mean, Difford sang only a song or two on their albums (and even less, if at all, on later albums), and Carrack was only a very occasional member of Squeeze.

Their early output was quirky New Wave stuff, not a million miles away from Elvis Costello, while their later stuff was more melodic (along the lines of mid period-Split Enz or early-Crowded House).

Buying a copy of their compilation album Singles - 45’s and Under for a couple of bucks from a Brashs bargain bin was a game-changer in my appreciation of them. In the late 70’s and early 80’s they were a GREAT singles band and that album had all of them on it, which led to me investigating them further.

They never quite cracked it as great album band though. IMO, Cool For Cats (hell, it’s got four of their very best singles on it…) and Play (an early 90’s release) probably came closest.

Difford as a lyricist is superb… right up there with Ray Davies in terms of story-telling with his ability to wittily convery the minutiae of London life.

Incidentally, ever heard the original (unreleased) version of Tempted, produced by Dave Edmunds and with Tilbrook on vocals? Fair to say, they pulled the right rein going with the Elvis Costello-produced version they did release…

Here’s a challenge - Wondering if anyone can help me identify a song. Played on 4zzz with some regularity in the last 2 years or so, so maybe also on rrr, pbs etc (definitely not commercial fodder).

Medium tempo with strong dirty electric guitar-driven melody over a classic Irish ballad-type structure. Protesty female vocals, probably Australian, given the sound and regular local airplay. I just can’t remember any of the lyrics and don’t know how to find it.

Really spitballing here but it’s not a Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers song?!
