A bit of a curio.
I only just became aware of it, and a way more fanier DD fan friend of mine didn’t know about it either.
Released as a single to promote DD’s greatest hits Decade album (but very annoyingly not On it), this medley thingy.
I freaking love it. It’s right up my street. But it’s kinda wild to me that it exists at all.
I’m still reeling from the fact that you didn’t know this existed. I know you’re much bigger DD than I am (TBH, I was more into their videos… … though I will say Save A Prayer, The Chauffeur and Ordinary World are very nice tracks), so would’ve thought you’d be all over it.
Not really my cuppa Twinings… a bit Stars on 45 for me…
Honestly had no idea it was a part of their oevre.
Would have been all over it at the time.
I don’t think it’s perfect, but as a 12”/medley/mashup…I think it’s very good. Way before it’s time.
Yes, I know Stars On 45, The Sweet Mix (how good!), even Hooked On Hooks…
But this isn’t that.
As I said, not really my cuppa… but I can acknowledge a few things…
Firstly, it sounds like they had fun making it.
Secondly, they’ve at least put some thought into using songs which are in compatible keys when they’ve been overlaid.
Thirdly, a bit more thought has gone into it than your average medley, where they simply pitched everything up 10%, chucked a drum machine beat behind it, played 30 second snatches of individual songs and simply linked them via a drum machine breakdown (cough… the Mi-Sex Non Stop Sex medley… cough cough…)
I heard Eddie first so…I’m probably biased. I prefer that. The original is cool, though.
I’d love to hear the thought process, though. Why this song? Why…use that to create this.
You’d think Gwen would have inspired a retrospective reappraisal. But nuh.
I mean…I get it. I can’t expect a nation to do what I can’t be arsed doing.
I’ve known for decades that some very clever people think a couple of their albums are the duck’s. But I don’t explore and just stick to the big singles. Which are great.
This one’s a bit out there, but relevant to the thread in some perverse way.
GF sent me a YT video, as she sometimes does, randomly. This was of the so-called “Sienna Rose” (I’m not sharing the vid), who within 20 seconds I identified as AI-generated. Without listening to the rest of it, I was a total klutz and honest enough to reply that “AI music can get in the bin”, when apparently GF was sending me the vid as a message “from the heart” and hadn’t twigged at all to the AI deception. Now I’m in BIG trouble! Thanks a farking lot, AI.
