6 was the number I got on my first Essendon jumper as a kid, probably for my 11th or 12th birthday. It got accidentally burnt in a camp fire within a few days and I was devastated. Neale did his knee not long after.
One the very best as a player and a human being. Deepest condolences to the Danihers.

Vale Neil Daniher, champion of the Essendon football club, champion of the AFL, champion of all champions. Come on AFL, please induct him as a Legend i to the AFL hall of fame.

Having touched so many in his 65 years, Daniher will be honoured with a state funeral service, Premier Jacinta Allan revealed.
“The family have accepted that offer of a state funeral and arrangements will follow,” she said.
“Right now, my thoughts and love go to Jan and the family, and I know the thoughts and love of all Victorians will be going to the Daniher family as we hold them in our hearts today.”
Allan said Daniher would not only be remembered for his “incredible contribution” to AFL, but also for his determination to find a cure for MND.
“That has touched the lives of so, so many families around the nation, as was recognised during his Australian of the Year recognition,” she said.
“We’re with [Neale’s family] right now, and we’ll continue to be with [them] as we keep up Neale’s fight against ‘the beast’ and find a cure for MND.”

I was t that game with my nine year old son. Early in the last quarter my son was crying because he thought we were going to lose. Then Neil kicked about 4 goals and gave us a narrow win.
A Calton supporter was paying off to me about how we did not deserve to win. I pointed to the scoreboard and walked away.
Up to that day my son wore Tony Buhager’s number twenty. He thereafter wore number six.

With Melbourne playing Essendon at the MCzg in 3 weeks, it would be a fitting football farewell if they commemorated Neal’s life at a game between the two Clubs that meant most to him.
Hopefully the Clubs can celebrate his life and plan something to honour him.

Lost my Dad to MND - he only lasted 6 months from diagnosis.
Neale fought the good fight for a long time. Well done. Good man.

A lot of the most promising breakthroughs in MND research and treatment are happening here, in Australia.
In large measure, that’s Neales’ doing.
His legacy is already unquantifiable. And likely to become more so.

Man, everyone and everything associated with this club just can’t seem to turn a trick at the moment.
That this happened so close to Queens birthday is a pretty steep blow. I’ve just noticed the big freeze beanies for sale popping up in the shops and supermarkets in the last few days.
I watch that 1981 game against FC on occasion because it gives one the best idea of the player he probably would have been had he not wrecked his knee, at least from what supporters have told me.
Everyone I know who watched him play (especially my old man) is pretty confident had it not been for injury he’d have been spoken about as a James Hird level footballer for Essendon.
