What a tragedy. One of the world’s most iconic buildings.
You can’t appreciate the enormity of the place unless you’ve been there, simply incredible building
from Reuters:
“We now believe that the two towers of Notre-Dame have been saved,” Paris fire chief Jean-Claude Gallet told reporters at the scene. “We now consider that the main structure of Notre-Dame has been saved and preserved.”
Where’s the hunchback going to live now?
This all could have been very easily avoided. I’m not even busy today.
The news might not have come across his desk yet
52 acres of wood apparently.
Its all designed to be hidden from the public - with the exception of the bell towers, the upper structure, particularly above the vaulted ceiling, was almost all wood - plus they were doing repair work on the roof and spire itself, so its possible there was additional wooden scaffolding on top of that.
Its devastating, but thankfully the bell towers appear to have been saved along with a significant part of the artefacts and relics.
Not religious at all but it’s a lovely old building and great place to grab a baguette and sit under the shade and people watch.
The scaffolding was metal, and apparently held firm and gave some support to bits not collapsed.
I was told a lot of the repairs over many years were done very cheaply. Instead of using stone to fix crumbling stone, wood was used to resemble stone.
Has it…
Ex-spired?
If only the French raked their cathedrals like they do in Finland.
