Our first AFLW squad: finalised, 30 + 3 top-ups

I think everyone agrees CatPhillips is our best player.

Also, I apologise to Frew; she’s failed with her last EIGHT shots at goal, not six.

A bottle of cash

If we want to boost our ruck stocks next season…

The Essendon Football Club has today announced players Bella Ayre, Olivia Barton and Jordan Zanchetta will not be offered playing contracts for 2023.

Bella Ayre joined the Bombers inaugural side after a 12-game AFLW career with Carlton and Brisbane. Ayre did not feature at senior level for the Bombers after an injury-riddled season in 2022.

Olivia Barton was recruited from Port Melbourne after playing 13 VFLW games in 2022. The 21-year-old made her debut for the Bombers in the Round 7.

Jordan Zanchetta featured in the Bombers’ 2022 VFLW Premiership side and was recruited to the AFLW Team for this season. She played three games for the Bombers including wins against West Coast and Sydney. She played 13 AFLW games for the Brisbane Lions before joining Essendon in 2022.

Georgia Harvey, AFLW List & Recruiting Manager/Head of VFLW, thanked Bella, Olivia and Jordan for their contribution to Essendon this season.

“Bella, Jordan and Olivia have shown great commitment and dedication to Essendon Football Club in our inaugural AFLW season. The players should all be very proud of the role they played in helping to build our club culture and we thank them for their contribution” Harvey said.

The Bombers finished with a 4-6 win-loss record, 10th on the ladder with a percentage of 98.6.

Well… at least they finally acknowledged Bella existed.

Remember that we have three LTI players, so this only gets us back to 30.

Obviously Nanscawen > Zanchetta and AshleyCooper > Barton, and Jorja played a minute or two more than Ayre this year…

What’s the current contract status of the players? Is it all year to year due to the newness of the team’s existence?

Are we expecting more delistings? Ryan, Doonan, Tierney?

BUMP.

Ignore the rest of the article going on about someone who is potentially set to miss the entire season starting one day after this airs.

A new documentary from AFL Studios, The Final Four, goes behind the scenes of expansion clubs Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and the Swans as they went about their initial list builds ahead of AFLW season seven in 2022.

The Final Four will premiere on the Seven Network on Thursday, August 31 following The Front Bar at approximately 9.45pm AEST, and will then be available on 7PLUS. It will be available on afl.com.au/aflw and the AFL Women’s App from Sunday, September 3 at 7.30pm.
