Peter "2MP" Wright - STAY IN THE TEAM, PETER?

You think he would grab this opportunity to be the main fwd with both hands.

if Essendon didn’t get him he would have been playing in the 2nds for Gold Coast then delisted at seasons end

Not a lot praise for 2MP from training reports over the pre season he needs to sharpen up quickly if he wants to stay in the side

“He’s got no presence” Yup, that’s the last word.

Tippa will make a good forwards coach when he retires. Can teach the key forwards where to position themselves

I appreciate a forward that can kick gimme goals and draw a free kick.
Wright is the opposite of McKernan in almost every way.

Wright is decent in the ruck. McKernan is horrible.
Wright draws free kicks. McKernan gives them away.
Wright has no physical presence in contests. McKernan has too much physical presence.
Wright doesn’t seem to be a good contested mark. Contested marking is probably McKernan’s biggest strength.
Wright makes the easy look easy and the difficult look difficult. McKernan makes the difficult look easy and the easy look difficult.

All for the same net result.

Wright will be an upgrade on McKernan in the AFL but a downgrade on McKernan in the VFL. That is the Smack paradox.

I think some people expect him to be a gun key forward of the comp. It’s all about the role he plays and not expecting him to take a game apart. All he needs to do is

  • Make a contest (not get out marked)

  • Bring the small players into the game by competing in the air

  • Take one of the oppo best defenders so others like Jones and Stringer can benefit

  • Be a good 2nd ruck back up

  • Avg about 1.5 to 2 goals a game.

That’s what I see his role as. I think he did most of it today, maybe got out marked once or twice. Not a bad game at all.

I didn’t see the game, how did he go in the contested situations- contested marking, ground balls etc

2MP sh**s on smack.

Big upgrade in many areas as you’ve stated

2MP is also a good set shot for goal.

Smack’s goal kicking in 2020 was horrendous

Is he tho? Almost shanked it but it went through

Yes he is.

Has always been. Doesn’t mean he never mis-kicks the ball though

He’s ok and that’s about it.

He should be a Ruck bit he’s not able to hold that position down. He stays forward but only looks like a Ruck resting forward for mine. Can’t see where the improvement will come from.

People have be naming a few recruiting failures but the one for me was Andrew Bomford After we recruited him a mate and I thought we would go to training to check him out. In the first 5 minutes of our viewing Hird was going for a mark in the goal square and Bomford came in blindly and clobbered him. It never improved from there.

I’m not expecting much from him at all but I wouldn’t be making any strong conclusions based on his first pre-season game with a new club.

Pretty sure he didn’t play any senior footy last year either, so we need to be prepared for him to take a little while to get going - especially in a very young and inexperienced forward line.

Overall I thought he was ‘meh’ but that’s ok. In terms of expectations, I was far more disappointed in Hooker’s game, tbh.

Joe will be a top 10 player in the comp if he stays on the park. Potentially top 5 IMO

2MP is lucky to be playing AFL.

Joe didn’t want to play for Essendon anymore. He’s irrelevant.

I know that one of our 190ish players told his house mate, that he was matched up on him for a while at training, and was able to outbody him easily.

His comment “no good”.

He’s a monster of a bloke who can kick straight and can be a better back up ruckman than Stewart or Smack.
He will demand the number one defender each week which will help Jones’ development with the number 2 or 3 defender playing on Stringer.
I think our midfield is going to be one of our strengths this year and if he can get some decent lace out passes he’ll play his role and kick 30+ goals for the season.

2MP was only brought in to be a stop gap to take the bigger defender and do second ruck duties while Bryan, Eyre and Jones develop.

We traded him for a fourth rounder and got GC to pay some of his salary, why are people surprised he has clear issues in his game he needs to work on?

No need for concern unless he is still best 22 in 2 years time

Was about to write virtually this. He’s a stop gap that cost a 4th. If he becomes more than that it’s gravy.

He did ok if your expectations were low.
