We should be able to nail our first pick as it will be pick 1-2 so I’m not too worried about it. I think it will be our second round pick that will really give us a boost and make a difference. Disco must get that absolutely right. There are many posts suggesting we trade our round 2 pick, however what if a trade opportunity doesn’t eventuate. Any thoughts on who we should pick ?
Actually, I think he was a forward at Colts level.I hope we can draft a backman who will become a forwardHooker
The key to what? Why is it more important to get a good player at that pick that in the later rounds? Earlier picks just give you a better chance of getting it right, but ultimately once they're on the list it doesn't matter where you were drafted. If Dodoro is picking up future Hirds in the 4th and 5th round and Tippas in the rookie draft he can blow as many early second rounders as he likes.I’m sure everyone would be happy with a player of Fantasia’s quality at that pick, but of course he wasn’t picked up in the second round was he.
I should have explained myself better CDS. Anyone can just go through the motions and pick the best available player as rated by scouts and the footy public. That’s not nailing it. A good outcome for a selector is selecting a player that several years down the track is re-rated as a player significantly better than his original draft round peers, perhaps one or more draft rounds earlier. In the case of our early round two draft selection, if Disco nails it, then that player may eventuate to be the equivalent of decent round one round draft , potentially elite. This is why I think its key. Disco can also nail a round 4 draft pick, but I think the chances of getting an elite player in round 4 of the draft is slimmer (not impossible) than getting an elite player from early round 2. In saying that, you are totally justified to mention Fantasia. He was a round 3 draft pick and the way he is currently playing he is knocking on the door of a round one draftee. That’s nailing it as was the Hartley round 4 pick (#68).

Apparently in the early 90’s, teams used to throw in training equipment with player trades to get it over the line. Can’t remember which club gave Fitzroy a couple of footballs and a net to put behind the goals and a draft pick for one of their players.
A goal kicking coach.
A kid that was suppose to go top 10 in most phantom drafts.… that barracked for us as a kid … and 6 weeks out from the draft, it leaked that he has chronic groin issues.
so laverde. except the groin.
Or KAV! without the barracking

If he’s a bottom-ager that would go top 10 the following year, I’m sold.
Depends.
If they down trade we end up with the (say) 20th non academy player. (Our 20th choice).
If they don’t downgrade their picks and there are day 5 GCS/GWS picks before 20 that they use to fund academy picks, then we get the 15th non academy player.
So most of the early picks are academy don't we still end up with the same pick number and still end up with the same kid we were always going for? We do we need to keep "remembering" that our pick won't be the number it is meant to be? Can't see how it changes who we were going for in the first place and whatever number they end up being. So if we get pick 1, then the acadamy picks come into play and our pick ends up being pick 6, don’t we still essentially have pick 1 because we all know who the acadamy kids are and weren’t going to select them anyway?
You’re right, it’s just a question of remembering the talent level to expect. The academies aren’t making the talent pool noticeably deeper (especially GWS), so if 20 goes out to 30 or something it doesn’t change who we can get, but there is a different level of expectation between a player of pick 20 quality and pick 30 quality.

A half back flank player, who we believe can make the move into the midfield later in his career.
Clarke / Galucci / Battle ?
Pick 2: Scott Gumbleton; Pick 18: Leroy Jetta; Pick 20: Tom Hislop

If the AFL doesn’t change the academy rules, and the academy clubs trade out of the first round for later picks worth more points, then expect this pick to become the equivalent of #28 or so. There are meant to be 11 academy kids ranked in the top 30. So you need to keep that in mind when evaluating who we might get.
I honestly have no idea who is the 20th odd non-academy draftee choices. I would think with our list as it is, best available would be the way to go as we don’t have any glaring weaknesses if Tippa and Fantasia can hold the small forward roles. We’ll see about that over the next 7 weeks or so.
