Well at least everyone knows the biases of darebin council now!
Actually as a man in a relationship with a lovely woman from a different cultural background than my own I think it would be nice that employers do think of that.
Itâs not hard working with someone with a different accent.
Iâve deffo been characterised overseas because of my Aussie accent and I didnât like it.
Probably discrimination but who knows.
discrimination is gonna keep happening
all thatâs been made illegal is you canât explicitly say that youâre doing it
So youâre suggesting it was an HR mistake? What do you base that on?
If itâs legitimate discrimination, I donât think itâs sensationalist at all.
Are you trying to downplay sexism or flatly deny itâs existence because its against an approved target?
hanlonâs razor: never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. whatâs more likely here - someone was a bit of an idiot, or a local council made a deliberate decision to openly violate the equal opportunity act?
the media coverage is sensationalist. âpc gone madâ articles are always guaranteed go absolutely boonta in terms of engagement. this particular incident means nothing to you, unless your career aspirations lie in the leaf-strewn gutters of reservoir and kingsbury. but media wants you to believe it does so youâll keep engaging with similar posts.
quote the post where iâve downplayed sexism and iâll respond to that question
Have you any proof that this was an innocent mistake? And with similar policies becoming more and more common, yeah, Iâd say violations of the equal opportunity act are entirely possible.
If this is legit, it isnât merely âPC gone madâ. Itâs a serious case of discrimination. Even if some remain blissfully aware, this influences us all regardless of media intentions for two reasons; Firstly, the moral issue it raises. All and sundry disavow discriminatory practices and want them stricken from society. And secondly, whoâs to say that you or I arenât next?
Honestly, (and with respect) the vibe Iâm getting is that youâre reaching for any and all explanations to excuse what appears to be blatant sexism. Some serious mental gymnastics going on there. I highly doubt youâd do the same if the victims werenât men.
If this isnât a media beat up or an innocent mistake and you are ok with it, then yes, you are downplaying sexism. Will happily consider any argument to the contrary or any other view you have on this. Not trying to start a shitfight, just trying to get a better understanding of your viewpoint.
He quite clearly said he didnât have any proof. Do you have any proof this isnât just a screw-up?
But really, do you think the council went out and deliberately broke the law? And publicised it?
According to the phone call I just had with them, yes.
If this isnât a media beat up or an innocent mistake, then iâm not okay with it, because itâs a blatant violation of the equal opportunity act. i donât think iâve inferred otherwise at all.
where we disagree is the significance of this. i think thereâs absolutely none, unless you are actively seeking employment in that area. âthin edge of the wedgeâ arguments in this area are always just making up sht to get mad at.
iâm so utterly confident that the outcome here is going to be (if it doesnât happen internally) the veohrc telling darebin council to stop being such dipshts, whereas you seem to be heading towards this changing the equal opportunity act.
it wonât.
Here in our Town, the Shire has couple of these large street-sweeping trucks and occasionally you see a female driver. However they have these nifty small ride-on units that do the footpath in the main shopping street, and they are always driven by this nice blonde young lady. She does a great job, very early morning and I just amazed how she gets to all the nooks and crannies. Reckon she learnt it , with a ride-on mower doing around trees in th eParks.
Looks like we found some common ground. Funnily enough, the lady I spoke with claims that what Darebin Council is doing is perfectly legal. Not sure if sheâs talking at a federal level, a state level or through her backside. Crazy, if true.
Strongly disagree with the bolded bit. Maybe Iâm taking it too literally but this flies in the face of your prior objection. The male gender is being excluded. Blatant sexism but no significance?
Honest question, Simmo. How would you react if the victims here were indigenous? Would you firstly resort to âcould be a media beatupâ, âcould be a HR errorâ or âyou donât want the job so what does it matter?â
I agree.
Bowlsman, fielsdman and wicketkeepsman all the way for me.
Groundskeepsman, scoresman.
The difference is that one is an example of an issue that has applied for decades, and that most people think should be rectified. This is one more data point among many showing the simple reality. Another nail in the coffin.
The council situation is a single example with no evidence of any trend, anyone else doing anything similar. It appears to be total outlier, which is then being elevated to the same level as if it is proof that this is happening across the board. It is a possible screw-up (as nobody can find them justifying their position, and it just doesnât make any sense), whereas the other is one more thread in a mosaic that anyone who isnât deliberately shutting their eyes can see.
It is comparing apples with oranges.
UmmâŚthanks Simmo.
I donât know where to start with your word salad of a post. I probably shouldnât even be responding to it.
Itâs not a possible screw up. This is 100% authentic. Saying itâs not a fair comparison is a cop out used to justify a stance that is more about sentiment than it is about reason. And thereâs plenty of similar trends. âGender quotasâ ring a bell?
as soon as news dot com or daily mail report on an instance of this happening we can discuss it then
Thatâs not a cop out.
Reckon more than a few people will get offended by this.
People are offended by pineapple, so yeah, probably.
Only on pizza
