Second - being PC which is what he really means seems to rub both ways. As this (older) article suggests about corporates actions around the FIFA World Cup suggest. (Although it will still go ahead and corps will still sponsor it)
I know that ‘get woke go broke’ is a very popular slogan (and conveniently for the people most likely to use it, only contains words of one syllable…), but can anyone think of something that was originally successful before it actually DID get woke then go broke?
Ultimately, how long is a piece of string? A lot of talk about Pat Cummins and his misgivings about Alinta Energy, who is a major sponsor of Australian cricket. So you’re not happy about them as a sponsor, but what about Bet365, who have been a sponsor of Australian cricket since 2012 and essentially their business model is based off profiting from people’s misfortune? Have you been able to establish how much Alinta contributes financially to Australian cricket, and more specifically towards your CA contract? Would you then be prepared to take a proportionate reduction in your CA contract based on that contribution? How about New Balance Pat? What are they paying the people who produce the sneakers, t-shirts and the cricket equipment you use? Are they profiting off slave labour? Will you be rowing a boat to England for next year’s Ashes given you must be concerned with the pollution that air travel causes? Have you investigated what organisations/private investors are contributing towards your exorbitant IPL contact? Would you dare speak out against them? Where does it end?
It’s about where it starts. Pat’s not a saint or a martyr but he’s started with Alinta because that’s what he’s concerned about. I have my reservations where famous people put up their hands because usually they’re standing on the shoulders of a lot of anonymous folks who’ve done the hard yards, and yes they’re usually very compromised, but at least they’re trying. ‘Where will it end?’ is the ultimate copout cry of the status quo lover. No, not the band, the $ driven ruination of the earth.
Then again, it’s Sky News we’re talking. I suspect they’re intentionally expanding their definition of ‘woke’ to generate more interest from their audience. Wankers.
Banning cigarette advertising in sport was probably woke before woke was even a thing.
Sport moved on.
Deciding what is socially acceptable sponsorship is a fine line. What is acceptable now may not be acceptable in two years time - entering five year partnerships may end up in some controversy down the line. Who knows?
All organizations can do is read the room at the time. Risk assessment. Should Netball Australia have foreseen problems with Hancock? If they consulted all stakeholders, then perhaps they should of.
As pointed out earlier, there are many seemingly benign sponsorships which may be problematic if you look hard enough, e.g. New Balance.
Answer? Above my pay grade.
I really enjoyed the woke world of sports, pretty funny. As was highlighted, these social warriors can look a tad hypocritical when their private choices are held up for assessment against the standards they demand of others.
He’s a massive wanker.
Justin Langer should have punched him in the nuts.
At 27 it was fine for me to be the focal point of Alinta TVC’s but ■■■■ me dead at 29 that’s an outrage.
I’ll pay a second of attention to the ■■■■ the second he’s not profiting off gambling organisations trying to indoctrinate my children, and stops playing cricket under lights.
I’m all for a greener future but this kent had his brain sandpapered
