I thought there was a thread somewhere for this but couldn’t find it.
My lovely girlfriend is fervent supporter of a number of social causes. You might even term her an SJW (but she disguises it quite well). Every now and then I offer my privileged anglo bloke stance on such issues and get politely derided as to why my view is anywhere from “not addressing the issue” to “fking stupid”.
But last night I nailed one and I’m really proud of it. We were discussing Australia Day and all it’s connotations, and my proposed solution is a cracker.
The injustice carried out against indigenous folk is a product of the British Empire, and 26/01 signifies the beginning of that. We become a republic, and that gets formalised in parliament on the first Monday of Feb of whatever year (when the MPs and senators return from summer break). It is a symbolic break away from the British Empire, and the atrocities they committed to form this place. The noveau Australia Day will celebrate indigenous history, as well as the immigration of European and Asian cultures that contributed to the culture we have today, and look forward to a nation of harmony.
Public holiday first Monday of Feb each year, so we don’t lose the summer long weekend. Stick the Hottest 100 and Adelaide test on that date as well.
Have at it.
