Please indicate how cyber insurance would have fixed this. I’m done making the running, you put some arguments into this discussion.
Insurance pays the ransom
Hackers walk away with their $10M dollars
Nothing hits the papers
But Medibank could have just done that. Cyber Insurance doesn’t impact the decision on whether or not to pay the ransom. In the scheme of what this is going to cost Medibank, $10m is kiddie money, which was my point.
You’re sticking to the theory that they know what they’re doing in this space?
I never said Medibank knew what they were doing. And (good) Cyber insurers definitely bring a lot of know how and experience dealing with this. But there are also very good firms who provide this support Medibank could have reached out to and hired.
What I’m saying is that this mess isn’t because Medibank didn’t take out insurance, its because they stuffed up the response (and quite possibly the IT protections as well).
That said, I totally agree with your other original point that insurance is generally worth purchasing. I wouldn’t say that though for a under 30s healthy individual with health insurance who isn’t planning on starting a family.
Yes, that was exactly my point

@Heffsgirl - that is terrible and concerning.
We are on the lowest hospital cover but it does cover spinal fusion because we’re going to need it soon for our oldest daughter.
I’ll be calling them now and asking them about caveats.
The devil’s in the detail.
Prostheses list reform ■■■■■■ around a lot of patients if the surgeons didn’t want to change.
I’d be triple checking your policy.
well that chat between hap and ant was a bit dissonant.
don’t hackers just come back a few months later and ask for more $$$ I mean bitcoin…
once they have the data not much medibank can do to prevent the release.
Govt need to tidy up information that’s kept of customers that have been terminated but they still have their details.
Hackers get the money then sell the data anyway.
@Mackster get the surgeon to itemise the stuff for the operation because titanium screws were something not covered. Make sure ever item is covered by your policy.
