R18 - Essendon vs Fremantle (21/7 4:35pm @ ES) - Pregame Discussion

To be fair, we were the interstate team that week and we beat us.

What the hell has happened there? He used to be a reliable kick for goal!

It’s going to be difficult to ignore him this week.

Many of the misses were close.
He presented really well, and field kicking is always on point.

I’d be happy with that.

Although I’d like to see Francis in if possible.

Their clearance work was good. Jack Martin if GC get 4 quarters out of him will be an absolute gun.

Well that’s clearly an impossibility, so why don’t you add Martin, Dangerfield and Franklin while you’re at it?

They are too outside. Everyone knows it’s inside mids we’re lacking. Much prefer Wallis and Miles.

Goddard, Saad and Mcneice were all outmarked in the F50 and we did look a bit small even though we expected a slippery, ground level contest. Freo play some tall forwards so that might enable Azza to come in for McNeice who had a shocker. Fanta for Long. Then a nice team will build as Zaka returns a week or 2 later, along with Stringer, and any more injuries are put on hold until 2028.

Pavlich is in pretty poor touch and I think Longmuir & Clive are both out injured.

(They play McCarthy who’s gone to shit, and B Cox who’s about 192cm. Looks like Sean Darcy got injured which probably throws fwd/ruck S Jones into the ruck full-time)

There is no chance Francis is coming in for McNeice. The suggestion is ridiculous.

Goddard certainly was well down on output this week. Perhaps the Pies game which was very intense and short break into GC has him struggling somewhat.

If there was a time to rest him it’s probably vs Freo this week.

I recall Sheedy doing this - recruited a player because they played well against us. I forgot the player’s name, but I thought they did just so so for us after we got them.

Ross Lyon is going to look at our video this week, and within 5 mins he will have spotted some vulnerability in our structure, a vulnerability that we didn’t know existed, and then he’ll exploit it perfectly, and we’ll be strangled, and we’ll only kick 3 behinds for the whole match, and we’ll be wondering what on earth happened to us.

Yesterday I thought they played 2 tall forwards (McCarthy & Cox) and 2 rucks (Darcy & Jones). Darcy played ok but was limping at the end. If we go tall down back no doubt rosstheboss will find a mosquito fleet to torment us. You heard it here first, changes for this week are -

IN Francis, Fanta
OUT Long McNeice.

edit : regardless I think Azza will matchup fine on Pav, but I don’t think anyone can contain Clive as he was a No 1 pick.

Freo’s Ryan Nyhuis referred directly to Tribunal, rough conduct on R Gray. No early plea available.

Dominated intra clubs though, so always got picked in early season games

Opposition teams scrutinise each other every week. Teams plan for it - both ways - to exploit the opposition’s weaknesses and to counter the opposition exploiting their team. Sometimes a coach will pull off a winning master move and sometimes it fails. Players are told what to do/expect and once again sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

It’s well known what type of footy we want to play. When we execute it well we are dangerous. For me it comes down to us being brave and having the confidence in yourself and teammates which means we execute our disposal well and smart. And of course to adjust accordingly to what’s happening during the game. This is all standard stuff and nothing clever on my part - but that’s how the game is.

Surely Freo have another player that no one has ever heard of waiting in the wings to kick five from the boundary?

Seriously? That was a great tackle.

I don’t know what a Nyhuis is, but good.

Nope. He’s outsourced that to Hirdy.

DO THE RIGHT THING, JAMES.
