Request for AFL assistance in 2026

Tassie shouldn’t be allowed to bid on players. They have too much abnormal power and is particularly bad for lower teams vs high teams in the comp.

I disagree. I think if anything they’ll want the prestige of pick #1.

You’re also showing EFC bias. My understanding is Salopek and Pilot are more highly rated at this stage. So right now if Tassie did what you suggest it would be Port that would be hit.

Sure, more a lack of knowledge on 2027 rankings.

Step one is to Seed the idea with media that they might bid at pick 1

Second step is to use that as trade leverage

Final step is to bid aggressively, maybe at pick 3 where they are still incentivised by the compensation pick. Bid on the top 2-3 NGAs and FS here wipe out any first pick and push back second picks to end up with an even stronger hand.

So we start with a weaker hand due to the dilution of picks and then the strong hand of Tas lets them Bid early.

If Tassie bid on a F/S or NGA with one of their first couple of picks and it is matched, do they also get the extra pick at the end of the first round?

Seems over the top if they do, since they already have so many picks and they won’t actually be finishing in next year’s bottom 5.

I’m straying away from the thread theme here, but will the real bottom 5 from next year’s ladder still all get that benefit, even though they won’t have the first 5 picks?

Youd assume they would though the trade restrictions the AFL have put on it feel half cocked so they may update the rules next year.

As it stands, a Bewick top 5 bid we match precludes us from the compo pick next year which when you consider we are likely to apply for an assistance package again is madness.

No, because one of the conditions is that you finished bottom 5.

Also, what is the big driver here? Most of their picks have to be traded, so bidding won’t actually help them.

No. At least, not with how the rules are currently written. The current rules say priority picks only apply for the bottom 5 teams. Tassie won’t be a bottom 5 team in 2027.

Won’t they?

If someone else is bid on before him then we would still get the pick

They won’t even be on the AFL ladder.

Oh yeah 2028 lol. Maybe we can beat them in finals again next year!!

im a little on this side as well,

we have a plethora of youngsters on the list, forget Robey, Sharp, Farrow. Zac Johnson is barely 6mths older, Gus Clarke, Vigo is 20. The list could go on

If we were aloud to pre list 2 - 4 state league guys as rookies for 2027 that would be fine. Maybe if we have another down year, ask the AFL to pre list our NGA’s & father/sons

We just beat the AFL’s new plaything in a VFL semifinal…we’ll be getting nish.

if we dont get the assitance then i wish we’d beaten both Sydney and Port this year. Dissapointing.

It’ll be an interesting watch, but does wiping picks out really have all that much value if you already have pick 1,2,4,6 etc ?

It’s not like a situation with a ‘normal’ club where you might (if you’re lucky) have 2 early picks. I tend to think - both because they’re starting from zero, and more because have some picks they’re forced to trade - there’s more in it for them to remain friendly with every club, in the initial few years.

Different story if it’s bidding on kids somewhere near where they’re actually rated. Keep the other clubs honest by all means, but really running their own race in the main.

DONS TO MISS OUT ON PICKS IN AFL ASSISTANCE

Essendon is set to miss out on extra picks as part of its draft assistance package, according to a report.

The Bombers sent a letter to the AFL asking for help similar to that which was granted to West Coast last year.

The Eagles wound up receiving an end-of-first-round draft pick and four additional rookie list spots over this year and the next two seasons.

But The Age reports on Tuesday nightthat the Bombers’ assistance package is “unlikely” to include extra draft picks, but rather “more likely” to consist of extra rookie list spots.

The publication claims the reason for that is the new draft rules introduced this year.

Essendon, set to pick first overall in November, will gain a compensatory pick if it has a draft-night bid on Port Adelaide-tied Dougie Cochrane or Carlton father-son Cody Walker matched.

That’s due to the new rule introduced for this year that stipulates bottom-five clubs whose first-round pick slides due to matched bids on concessional players will receive a second-round compensation pick.

But the Bombers won’t be the only club to benefit from that new clause, with Richmond, West Coast, potentially Port Adelaide — depending on if a bid for Cochrane comes before one for Walker — and North Melbourne.

AFL Media reported in July that one of Essendon’s assistance requests — for Tasmania not to be able to bid on the likes of 2027 father-son prospect Koby Bewick — would not be granted.

At the end of the 2023 season, North Melbourne received three end-of-first-round draft picks over two years as part of an assistance package.

The AFL Commission is set to confirm its decision on Essendon assistance in the week leading up to the grand final.

It’s good to be a top 6 team or live in QLD. We have a live situation today where we could bid on a player that’s not matched by the linked team and not gain an extra pick?

West Coast who got the extra pick 10 months ago have access to the same bonus pick we have this year?

The logic is simply pathetic at best.
