Brad Johnson believes Essendon’s win over West Coast is a ‘turning point’ for the club
May 30th, 2021 12:00 am
Western Bulldogs games record-holder Brad Johnson believes Essendon’s famous win over West Coast is a “turning point” for the club that could spark a genuine tilt at the flag for future years.
The Bombers on Saturday night overcame a 29-point deficit to produce an upset 16-point win over the West Coast Eagles, who suffered their first loss at home so far this season.
Ben Rutten’s side kicked seven of the last eight goals of the game in a remarkable second-half surge that saw their forward line of Jake Stringer, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and Cale Hooker catch fire.
Yet there were contributions from across the whole team, with Zach Merrett, Darcy parish, Kyle Langford and Andrew McGrath excellent through the midfield, veteran Dyson Heppell crucial in defence and young guns Archie Perkins, Harry Jones and Nik Cox all having critical moments throughout the game.
Speaking on Fox Footy’s Saturday Stretch post-game, Johnson said Essendon’s win reminded him of the Western Bulldogs’ famous Round 5, 2015 win over Sydney – a victory that saw the Bulldogs announce themselves as a future threat to the competition. Eighteen months later, they were AFL premiers.
“The confidence they (the Bombers) will get from it is huge … That’s the turning point in their whole club’s future, right there. That’s the game,” Johnson said on Fox Footy of Essendon’s win over West Coast.
“I remember when the Bulldogs spoke about when they beat Sydney and it was the best game Bob Murphy ever played in. That was the start of their build to the premiership in 2016.
“This is the start for Essendon footy club for where they’ll be in two, three, four years time.”
On average, the Bombers were over one year younger than the Eagles and had played over 40 games less than West Coast, yet still won.
“There’s games along your career that’ll stick in your memory for a lifeline,” four-time premiership Hawk Jordan Lewis told Saturday Stretch . “To win over in Perth against West Coast is one of the great achievements of a young side.”
The Bombers now sit inside the top eight with a healthy percentage of 106.2 – a remarkable achievement considering they were 2-6 after Round 8.
“You’ve had the feeling this year that there’s something really building there,” St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt told Fox Footy.
“Their win-loss, up until the last few weeks, hasn’t been I think a true reflection of their form this season. What has been is their percentage, which has been the healthiest of all the teams outside the eight.”
Dual premiership Kangaroo David King added: “There’s something about winning young … They’ve got nine players in this group that have played less than 35 games.
“It’s the youngsters that are driving this group on the back of what Heppell and McGrath and Merrett and these guys are setting up.
“What an awesome performance.”
Heppell said he was proud of the fortitude his team showed in tough circumstances on Saturday night.
“I just think the fight we showed tonight was fantastic,” Heppell told Fox Footy post-game.
“We were down (by 29 points) and grinding our way back into it, we stuck fat and turned the game around.
“When we were down by those margins, we still felt we had patches where the game was right on our terms. We knew the game would turn and we managed to finish off in front of goal a bit better.”
Thank God I know what Brad Johnson reckons …
i missed watching the game live on tv but got to watch it on kayo from the start when i got home.
Another team effort.
Thought Ridley was awesome early.
Lav getting belted again but standing up.
Zaka was good first half second half seemed to be the guy making the error in the chain second half, think he lacks a little confidence still.
Hind made a few errrors, but was still very good offensively.
Redman had another solid game.
Thought Perkins was very good and his game shaded Cox
Jones very good also.
Hooker loves a goal was on and always seemed a aerial threat throughout the match.
Stringer barely noticed first half thenhehad that period late in the game where he kicked 3 unanswered goals, clutch.
How awesome was it to see waterman kick the sealer, especially given his brother had kicked 2 goals, but also cost them 2goals.
Thought umpires were pretty good, even as far as saying favoured us early.
still some decisions where your likehow did they get to that decision, but really non event.
Also put whistle away in last few minutes, Thought Perkins got mark or freekick and they didn’t pay either.
We had injury god’s on our side with them losing Kelly early then Allen - who was getting beaten by Jones plus nic nat can’t run out a game and Yeo was on reducedminutes as returning. So thought we would have better legs at the end.
Those last 2 goals before half time were very handy.
Thought Phillips was solid in the ruck against nic nat.
Merrett, Parish, McGrath, Langford got on top of their mids late.
should be a good match next week against tigers, hopefully a crowd get to watch.
You’re right. He didn’t get a lot of it tonight but he does those freakish things. I thought he was going to end up like Flat Stanley after that tackle. It was fantastic.
Was it zerk that also ran down and effected the kick of someone he had no right to? Possibly Ryan?
yep he did.
Grab yourself some bacon and eggs, a coffee and juice.

MAYBE the season really has turned around for Essendon.
The Bombers reversed a 29-point deficit to upset West Coast by 16 points at Perth Stadium on Saturday night.
In doing so, they won their third consecutive game, for the first time under coach Ben Rutten. They go into Sunday inside the top eight.
It took Jake Stringer a while to get into the game, but his two final-term goals were crucial. And former Eagle, Alec Waterman, kicked the goal with six minutes to go to put his new side 15 points ahead and cement the win.
Earlier in the season the Bombers lost three games by less than a goal — to Hawthorn, Sydney and Greater Western Sydney.
But they found a way against Fremantle in round 9, the first victory of their current streak.
And after they looked gone against West Coast, they piled on seven of the last eight goals of the game for a famous victory.
THE TURNAROUND
KNOWN as the premiership quarter, the third term has not been a strength for Essendon this season.
Going into this game, they had lost eight of 10 third terms, including the past six.
So when they trailed West Coast by 17 points at the main break, the Bombers looked in trouble.
When Josh Kennedy kicked the first goal of the second half, his third, and the margin blew out to 25 points, the threat of floodgates opening was real.
And those floodgates did open, with the Bombers kicking the last four goals of the term.
Darcy Parish and Zach Merrett’s good work in the midfield started to reap rewards.
Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti started getting busy in attack and when Stringer knocked one through from the boundary line from a set shot, the margin fell to single figures.
Nik Cox failed to kick his second goal for the term, just before the siren, leaving the margin at three points at the final break.
ONE IN, TWO OUT
THE Eagles missed two of their stars in the second half.
While they welcomed back dual All-Australian Elliot Yeo, Tim Kelly and Oscar Allen sat and watched the game unfold from the bench, injured.
Kelly had 11 touches in the opening term and helped the home side open up a narrow two-point lead at the first break.
But a Merrett tackle in the centre square at the opening bounce of the second quarter ended with Kelly in an uncomfortable splits possession.
He limped off the ground minutes later and was subbed out with a right knee injury.
Kelly has been crucial for the Eagles in the absence of Yeo and Luke Shuey due to injury, averaging more than 27 disposals a game this season.
Yeo played his first game since Round 11 of last season, missing the Eagles last eight games of 2020, including the one-point loss to Collingwood in the elimination final.
Allen landed hard and awkwardly from a marking contest late in the second term and didn’t see any ground time in the second half due to a head injury.
WASTED CHANCES
THE Eagles’ sharp-shooting forwards were on song early and ended the first half with an accurate 9.0 on the board.
The Bombers had three more scoring shots in the first two quarters but trailed by 17 points.
Stringer, returning from injury, had just two handballs in the first quarter. When he finally got his chance in the second, he slaughtered both shots on goal.
Kennedy didn’t, making him pay after taking a contested mark and kicking his second goal for the term from a tight and difficult angle.
McDonald-Tipungwuti and Kyle Langford made the most of their rare chances in the last two minutes of the term to keep the margin managable.
What a great win. Being on the Far Side of the World had to rely on dodgy SEN stupidly delayed IP radio … so turned to Blitz. Loved the rollercoaster blog today. Thanks to all and Cpt Jack for the ride. Heart stopping or what.
We’re on our way we Bombers. That’s for certain.
