Review THE WIN vs GWS - 2026 round 19 - the kids did it for the kids

A win for the ages, loved watching the highlights from here in Vietnam.

Yep can confirm, that was the youngest squad fielded by any team this year

So what you’re saying is….■■■■ Cartlon?

As @Aceman astutely pointed out in the match thread, our absolute worst patch of the day was when we had four youngsters on the bench.

There is no “changing of the guard” happening. It has happened.

Not enough Dougs around these days.

Oliver gave it away after the free was given, smiling and laughing at Roberts as if to say “you got sucked in mate” If it had connected on the chin, Oliver would have been angry.

I don’t think there’s much difference between pick 1 and pick 2 this year. Hell, maybe even picks 1 to 4.

But there is a big difference between finishing last and second last this year:

  • if we finish last, we open up a possibility to trade with Port for pick 4 on the proviso we don’t bid on Cochrane
  • If we finish last, we can walk someone to the preseason draft.

Some fans complaining

Imagine if we’d lost

My missus often assures me it’s not the size of your pick it’s how you use it

Simply, that game was won on defensive pressure. Look at the tackle numbers of our small and half forwards:

  • Kako: 7
  • Caldwell: 7
  • El Achkar: 6
  • Day-Wicks: 5
  • Sharp: 5

Spot on with such a large group of young players!

The last month or so I’ve switched from wanting pick 1 above all else to wanting wins. I feel like the malaise and decay festering around the club was becoming overwhelming, and the young kids needed the boost from winning. This win was off the back of our youth, and not a middle aged list clogger filled win which was a Brad Scott special his first 2-3 years.

Our pressure was much improved and the effort was definitely there, make no mistake the Giants p*ssed this away though. We conceded 16 marks in our D50 from 46 entries, that’s awful. Our tall forwards gave us very little aerially in our forward half. Caddy’s loss was very apparent.

I’ll still take it for the morale boost, and was happy with our pressure. I was Brad Green’ing every one of our goals for the kids.

As solly said, he wants to hit preseason with momentum…. Good showings are important, as are a couple of wins, particularly for the young blokes.

I’m going to back Rosa in on the draft.

If we have pick 2 instead of pick 1, I’m good with this.

Needs to be suspended for staging.

Does he ever? Second, third, fourth efforts in almost every contest he’s in. He just doesn’t give the oppostion an easy posession. Even the guys second and third in a chain of posession aren’t ever fully clear when Sharp is involved in that phase of play.

He’s even an upgrade on what Durham does he’s that good.

It’s great to finally draft an absolute animal of a footballer. He’s our George Wardlaw but without the dodgy hammies and cleaner skilled.

Almost to the point of being Douglas.

All good points, however, I don’t think all these points are gonna impact us as much as you think they will imo.

  • I don’t think it will reduce the odds of us getting assistance from the AFL. 2 wins out of 30 odd is still pretty grim viewing and there is still a fair chance we do actually finish bottom by seasons end anyway.
  • Other than Arty Jones potentially not committing to the dogs (from most reports looks like he will re-sign with them), is there any other decent players that we have been linked to that we can use the PSD threat?
  • You mentioned pick 1 is not the worry but you listed here as Richmond having a pick before us. If we trade Merrett to hawks, it will mean we have a pick 16 before them as well.
  • I think this point of having leverage trading with Port or Carlton is something that we may have to wear. However, say if we do have picks 16, 20, 25 and potentially an additional pick from Ridley trade, then I think it’s something that we can definitely use to get another pick in the top 10 anyway.
  • A standout player may emerge, but that is hypothetical at this stage.

  1. I disagree on assistance. I think if we get it we will now get less. I suspect pick #19 as assistance is off the table. But see the AFL Assistance thread.
  2. An in the know has claimed we’d lined someone up. No idea who or how good. See the trade thread.
  3. It means each pick is one back. In 2016 that might have meant missing Ridley. It meant in 2023 paying a second to move up one spot.
  4. Still lose leverage
  5. Agreed
