Match Report out

Essendon VFL has claimed a 15 point victory over Williamstown at Windy Hill Oval.

The lead changed multiple times throughout the game but it was the Dons that held on and collected the four premiership points.

Joshua Begley was the lead goal kicker. The strong forward booted four goals and finished with 11 disposals, five tackles and three marks.

Darcy Parish returned from injury and proved he is back to his best, finishing with 27 disposals, four marks, two tackles and one goal.

Davide Myers and Jordan Ridley were impressive collecting 47 disposals combined.

Myers finished with four marks and three tackles whilst Ridley was impressive overhead with 13 marks.

Joel Ottavi was great on debut, setting the standard in the first quarter with two goals, he took five strong marks throughout the game.

Time to shop Ridley to Freo. Worked out well for us last time.

Think this Ridley might be a keeper. Sounds extremely good overhead.

The question is how many of the marks are kicks laterally across the backline, how many are intercepts, how many are contested?

There was definitely too much laterally in the backline at times today. A lot of Ridley’s marks come from him reading the play better than his man, such that he gets to take it uncontested.

Thanks as usual @DJR!

Mitch Brown report?

Why does Mutch get hit in the head so much report?

Does Kobe have a sister?

Miss Mutch?

Parish clearly a class above and of course begs the question, why didn’t he go to Sydney? The only other player who looked like he deserved consideration for next week is Begley. Nobody else of the younger guys looks close to physically ready to play. Redman,Morgan, Long are way off contention.

We got an early break (25-8) and, despite briefly losing the lead in the second quarter, we maintained a margin similar to that for most of the rest of the day.

We lost our FF in Smack and our FB in Ferry. We responded by bringing in debutant Joel Ottavi and the previously-injured Mitch Brown for those spots, and then also pushed Francis to the backline (perhaps expecting he would be busier there as we were taking on a top-rated team).

Ottavi was an instant success, kicking 2.1 in the first quarter. All this year we’ve felt a bit short on the spine – injuries to Brown and Ambrose and Ridley left us short and with almost no other injuries there were few opportunities for VFL-listed players to fill that gap.

Ol’ Sammy Dunnell troubled us badly in the first half before slacking off (though Lachlan Schultz took up a bit of that slack). At times in the second it felt like just a matter of time before they started converting their chances and running off with it. We wrestled back the lead late in the second quarter and then held on to it.

None of our backline (e.g. Dea Brown Francis Redman Ridley HepA, Hocking at times) were stars but they all did their job and helped their mates. The tackling all over the ground was really good and a significant factor in the win.

Hocking had some definite highlights, including a little specky onto the side of two competing players deep down back. Stanton, less so — he’s not hurting the VFL team but he’s definitely not looking like returning to AFL level. That I felt the need to even suggest he could be hurting the VFL team says it all.

Parish and Myers were the midfield backbone, Bird had a relatively quiet game.

Boyse and Begley roamed widely from their nominal forward positions. Only one ended up with the goals, but both were important.

The rucks (for both teams) weren’t a huge factor in this game.

Clarke had a bit of a setback this week, with his kicking deficiencies more obvious than for a while. Mutch on the wing wasn’t overly involved. Long had a good third quarter but not much else.

We did it hard, and WE WON.

Not having a go at you Jodi but this whole dissecting of stats is really starting to ■■■■ me. If a player takes a mark against others it’s a contested mark… if a player is good enough and smart enough to get out on his own and take an unopposed mark, it’s just as valuable, maybe more so because he has time and little pressure and is able to set up someone further afield.

Same goes for possessions.

The rest is just noise to justify the seemingly hundreds of stat gurus coming out of every available piece of woodwork.
