Round that overlaps ANZAC Day – Non Essendon Games

Essendon should have matched Melbournes offer from all reports Hibberd wanted to stay

Gawn destroys richmond in the ruck. Clearances end up about equal.

So, is there actually any correlation between how good a ruckman is and winning the game?

When I tuned in they had Martin and some other bloke (Grigg?) rucking. All the seemed to do was run at the demon ruckman to make contact and somehow miraculously not give away a free.

They also had Caddy & Graham out so missing important inside mids.

I think as we saw Geelong do against Syd in the final last year and Danger was playing fwd, and what the Tigers do every week…

It’s all about which team can pressure and spread hard enough, and for long enough. Tigers simply out work teams over the 4 quarters.

And only those who are skillful enough with ball in hand to deny possession and pick way through and then over the press can beat it which is very rare.

Was noted Crows implemented a “chip and charge” tweak to gamestyle vs Tigers round 2 which basically required courageous ball movement that opened up gaps in press and then long kicks to isolated fwds had them on top. Jenkins / Tex had 9 goals IIRC

Dees too often going safe kick long down line. Tigers force a turnover in midfield, get the ball out of congestion and huge wave of runners fwd.

I don’t think they’ve got any magic sauce.
They’re pretty good everywhere, no weakness anywhere, and very very consistent. They shuffle their bottom 3-4 regularly, keep them fresh and hungry.

Theres probably a difference in understanding of the expression " the game was won/lost in the midfield"

Theres centre bounces and stoppages then theres general midfield play. Richmond ( and others) like Essendon can win against good teams in spite of a lack of dominance at stoppages/centre bounce. For us its about the risky kick into the corridor, which leads to turnovers sometimes but when it comes off, we get a high percentage shot on goal. For Richmond it seems to be close contested play in the midfield turning it over then locking it in and eventually scoring.

Collingwood have the better midfield, but its no foregone conclusion they will win. If our risky centering kicks come off, we can win, but we have to breakdown the Collingwood method of spread then setting up scoring chains down the wings followed by overlap run inside 50… Thats the way they have been beating us on Anzac day for years.

makes me sick to think of all the times we let those clowns beat us when they looked down and out

Richmond cheer squad last night were rolling out “we are Richmond, we are Richmond!”

Fk off you mongrels. Sh*t game last night for the most part. The dees still suck, which is lol

Actually thought the Dees took it up to them and played OK for most of the game. Their contested ball work was v good but the lack of outside run killed them, along with some fumbling at crucial moments. Kept thinking whether we’d be any better against the Tiges …?

Someone made a meme of all the failed Melbourne coaches celebrating after beating us like they won a GF… can’t for the life of me find it…

Our best bet v the Tigers is our forward efficiency. Last year we made the most of our chances and that keeps us in games longer than it should.

77k last night. Yeah, bigger than today.

that’s pretty much it.

teams will have to figure out different ways to beat richmond though, cos there simply isn’t enough skillful players let alone teams that can constantly just hit targets under extreme pressure all the time.

@scotty21 in america @ burger king you can get 10 nuggs for 1.69 (ex tax). outrageous

I bookmarked this when you posted it and finally got the chance to watch it in full. Wow! That may be our greatest comeback win ever. I know about the North and Crow’s prelim comebacks, but to be 41 points down at 3/4 time and Melbourne kicking the first goal to make it 47 - nobody should get home from there. Amazing! Salmon was superb, as was Somerville. Loved Wanga’s goal under all that pressure and @The_5th_Daniher would love Kicket’s mark running back into the goalpost. Must have been Ezard, Anderson and Sporn’s last season with us. Worth watching the interview’s at the end too. 10/10!
