Russia invades Ukraine - 4 - from 14 March 2023

Actually Pence would be closer to actual conservative Christian values and he supports Ukraine.

I doubt that conservative Christians consider Trump one of them, but just as a defense against liberals hostile to them.

Re relevance of other GoP candidates. Conceivably DeSantis could win primaries, but if he does a lot of Trump voters won’t show up or will vote for Trump as a third party candidate, so GoP would be largely irrelevant in the election and also makes it unlikely that DeSantis would win primaries.

If anything DeSantis position on Ukraine is worse than Trump’s.

But the bigger danger for Ukraine than possibility of Trump or any GoP candidate defeating the Democrat candidate is from general hysterical chaos in USA and Democrats wildly unprincipled mood swings.

Pence is educated enough to see through Russian bullshit. But there’s a lot of right wing media that is drinking in the RT propaganda and presenting it to the Republican base. It’s a real dynamic. It’s going to have an influence in the primaries.

The fact that both realistic candidates for the GOP are against supporting Ukraine is a new and very concerning shift. The GOP establishment is pro-Ukraine, but as the Trump era showed, the party can be distorted by a single personality very quickly.

Wow that’s the most logical sidewalk interview I’ve ever heard from Russia. Hopefully he lives in a one story house.

It gets confusing when ANZ and other islands in the region get labelled as part of Australasia, sometimes Oceana.
Then there’s Asia Minor.

Logical, clear and articulate. Makes a difference from the usual spiel of citizens on the street, where logic is anthema.
Russian military intelligence is to intelligence what military music is to music. (Apologies for borrowing and paraphrasing this comment. )

I wouldn’t worry too much about De Santis, he’s not particularly solid on principles, plays the political game.

From wikipedia on Ukraine:

Russian invasion of Ukraine[edit]

In 2014 and 2015 he supported sending weapons to Ukraine to counter Russia, and reproached President Obama, saying he had no effective strategy in the face of Putin’s aggression on Eastern European countries. In 2023, he questioned US involvement in Ukraine and described Russia’s hostility against NATO countries as not serious. At the same time, however, he reiterated criticism that the Obama administration did not deliver lethal weapons to Ukraine at the time and thus the U.S. did not show strength against Russia.[25][26]

DeSantis denounced the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and praised the Ukrainian resistance.[27] On March 1, he said that President Biden was going too easy on Russia,[28] and that Biden should apply sanctions to the Russian oil industry.[29]

In a February 20, 2023 appearance on Fox & Friends, DeSantis said he thought the Biden administration had a blank check policy regarding its support toward Ukraine and that Russia did not pose a threat to Europe. He called on the Biden administration to articulate a clear strategic objective and not to pursue a policy of open-ended funding for Ukraine. Also during the interview he would criticize President Joe Biden for visiting Ukraine and said he thought Russia was hostile but that China was a larger threat. [30] DeSantis has also expressed support in the belief that Putin would refrain from other invasions, particularly into NATO countries; his comments notably contrasted from Mike Pence, who took a more hawkish view onto Ukraine and believed that Putin would attack other countries regardless of their membership in NATO.[31]

That says to me that he will have a very neutral stance on Ukraine until he’s in charge to get through the MAGA weirdos in the primaries and then will change his stance to match what he thinks will keep him in power.

In itself it is only a straw in the wind. But the overwhelming majority of both “random” telephone polls and street interviews reflect unwillingness to be identifiable for potential very heavy penalties.

Even small numbers willing to be identifiable expressing such views on the street, in social media and even, more indirectly, on State TV, reflects a gale force wind stirring things up.

Either this regime or a replacement has able to terrify such people into silence or it disintegrates. They cannot mobilize without also having martial law to silence such opposition. They cannot sustain the war without mobilizing both conscripts and war production. They cannot lose the war without losing power. So I still expect martial law.

Unfortunately there may still be more fascists in a position to kill their incompetent opponents within the regime and take power to crush all such public opposition under martial law than there are people ready to move from being willing to risk expressing opposition to actually taking power from well armed fascists.
