UPDATE: The strike on the Russian IL-22M Mission Command aircraft was preceded by an air raid alert over the Kerch Bridge. Probability that the aircraft was shot down by Russia’s own air defense is now quite high.

Budanov is doing his job perfectly here. If Russia suspects Ukraine was responsible, it forces them to change their behaviour. If they know it was friendly fire, the air patrols don’t need to be changed. It doesn’t matter if Ukraine did or didn’t make the attack, the key is for Russia to withdraw their surveillance.
This is an odd video to link, but it is an extraordinarily good way to describe how Ukraine’s small air defence wins can have huge flow on effects. Imagine Ukraine’s air defence are the wolves and Russian aircraft are the deer.
