Russia is naughty America is comical

Hopefully the Ukrainian people will get through this.

Imperialism was the problem, not enough room in Europe for two massive imperial type countries. HM is right tho, war was unavoidable.

Still lots of angst left over from the dozens of wars that had taken place over the previous 150 years.

England had to enter WW1 to protect its far flung empire, simple as that.

Something that is interesting to note on WW1 was that in the years from 1908 to 1913 European spending on armament blew out by 50%.  All countries were spending huge amounts on modernising their war machines and both Germany and Britain were in an arms race with their respective navy machines. All of that came about due to the number of political manoeuvrings that were going on all over Europe with quite a number of treaties being signed and redone throughout the late 19th Century.
Suffice to say that Europe was a mess for much of the years before WW1.  There were too many egos, too many countries trying to establish a power base after the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire and with the collapsing of the Ottomon Empire, the collapsing of Csarist Russia and the creation of Communist Russia.  That whole period was a boiling sea of changing political landscapes.  Oh yeah, the Balkins wars were also happening at this time and many egos were damaged in that period.  Festering boils in some places which re-ignited in the 90's.
As has already been said, war was inevitable.

■■■■■■■ Russia off always ends well

fark, thought this was a thread about ■■■■

It’s getting harder to justify military spending for the abstract war on terror.

Another Red threat should see the budgets given a healthy boost.

Indeed, it's the war that all Americans love.  Pesky Ruskies and the red menace.

Hard to compare the two. Gorbachev inadvertently brought about the end of USSR.

If anything I predict Russia returning to communism in the not to distant future or a quasi version of it ran by the new Stalin, Putin.

For the first time ever I’m not sure America is In a position to respond to this either.

They don't want American bases on their border.

Fair enough.

So Russia is wrong to be getting involved in another countries internal conflict?  US hypocritical much?

IT, there are a few concepts that America finds almost impossible to grasp. Subtlety is one, irony is another.

Counting is 4th and knowing when lists aren't working is another.

Hopefully the Ukrainian people will get through this.

Ukrainians have a deep deep deep hatred of the Russians. This is bigger than Crimea. No love lost. Goes back to the old soviet days in 1932 and the Russian led soviets killed and starved 9 million Ukrainians, an act of genocide on par with the holocost.
The Ukrainians call it the Holodomor - the Hunger.
Millions starved as Soviet troops and secret policemen raided their villages, stole the harvest and all the food in villagers' homes. They dropped dead in the streets, lay dying and rotting in their houses, and some women became so desperate for food that they ate their own children.

Similar sort of thing between the English and the Irish in the 1840s. English landlords kept exporting foodstuffs from Ireland...just the spuds, that the paddies lived on, were cactus.

This is true, as far as it goes.  But it was a lot truer 70 years back.

Since then, the USSR did their damndest to seed Russians all over their various republics (including the Ukraine) to dilute ethnic powerbases.  And the Crimea, in fact, was historically part of Russia and was only acquired by the Ukraine under communism, relatively recently, historically speaking.

I'm sure ethnic Ukrainians are not exactly fans of Russians, but a big proportion of Ukrainians these days ARE Russians - they speak Russian, they attend Russian orthodox church, etc etc.  Russians are even in a significant majority in the Crimea.  When you say 'Ukrainians think ...' or Ukrainians hate...' remember you're only talking about ethnic Ukrainians.  If you're talking about citizens of the Ukrainian nation, then the truth is a lot more complex and divided.

Anyone else read this thread title like this?

Like Rwanda, like the Balkan states, like Northern Ireland...

The more that I read about this the cloudier it gets.

I'm beginning to think Russia has a pretty good pretext in its move to occupy the Crimera.

Seriously though. Putin is no Gorbie. He is a very wealthy man with some serious power and some serious business interests. A little bit scary.

More than a little. It's always concerning when we laugh at Putin, 'look, he's topless on a horse' because he is extremely powerful and ruthless. Look what happens to anyone that crosses him.

There is no one who crosses him...I know this because he told me that.
