Sean Murphy - fitness muggins

Too late he ain’t leaving Adelaide Burgess btw

What we DONT need is a cutting edge program that can fast track our players physical development.

There must be a number of proven and decent S&C coaches about from other sports, coupled with rehab specialists/physios. Get a few of them.

Dave needs to take the lid off the canon and warm it up.

We only need him for 12 months to set up a program.

It’s not like we haven’t changed our fitness staff before. We should be targeting the best. It’s never too late, Adelaide is only 45min away.

Dear Sean

I write as it has again come to my attention that the fitness and conditioning programme of our AFL squad …
Let me just cut to the chase Sean old sport …

The thing I don’t get is many coaches and fitness staff come from other clubs. Many from successful ones, how are they not comparing what they see on track with intensity, program design, running and weight’s performance differentials and working on improving it.

Murphy cam from one of the most successful club of recent history he would surely know what the metrics are we need to be hitting.

What does that tell you.

Actually what did the review tell us - apparently that we need a seperate review.

AFL 2023: Essendon add former Brisbane medical services boss Peter Blanch, Essendon injury list | Herald Sun

Essendon has brought in a high-performance guru from Brisbane Lions to help get on top of the injury woes which have plagued the club in recent years.

The Herald Sun understands the Bombers in January appointed Lions’ medical services boss Peter Blanch, who oversaw one of the most successful medical programs in the league at Brisbane between 2016-2021.

Blanch, who also had a stint at Essendon amid the supplement saga fallout between 2015-16, has consulted the Bombers this year and will play a key role in a review of Essendon’s fitness department along with football boss Josh Mahoney at season’s end.

The low-key appointment of Blanch was, in part, designed to examine the Bombers’ training methods and address the availability and injury issues which have kept some of their most important young players on the sidelines over the past two years.

Injury prevention is a huge priority for Essendon with last year’s review identifying the need to improve the Bombers’ fitness and high performance standards under new coach Brad Scott.

But the Bombers have again been hard-hit by injury this season with the club recording the fourth-worst injury rate across the competition over 10 rounds in 2023.

It is expected Essendon will consider a shake-up of its high performance department at the end of the year after a major overhaul of its football department including development coaching staff last year.

In his six years at the Lions, Blanch was responsible for the “management of all medical services to the Lions’ playing group” and the “implementation and assessment of injury prevention”.

His skill set was a factor in Joe Daniher’s decision to leave Essendon for Brisbane at the end of 2020 as he worked to get on top of his groin issues, while former cat Lincoln McCarthy has also credited Brisbane’s medical program for helping save his footy career.

Blanch arrived at Tullamarine in January by the time some of the injuries to the club’s key talls already took hold, including Reid and Cox.

Essendon has still managed to make clear progress on the field under Scott this season despite the injury rates, pipping Richmond on Saturday night to record its fifth win of the season to sit outside the eight on percentage.

And in a major boost on the run home, the Bombers will play two games each against cellar-dwellers West Coast and North Melbourne, including the first clash against the Eagles on Saturday night in Perth.

Defender Jayden Laverde (shoulder) and midfielder Dylan Shiel (calf) are a chance to return for the clash against the Eagles, while Matt Guelfi will also be considered after coming back through the VFL.

According to Champion Data, Essendon has missed 91 total games to injury this year behind only West Coast (114), St Kilda (107) and Richmond (99). The Saints have been rocked by some soft-tissue problems to key players but have still surged to fifth spot with seven wins under new coach Ross Lyon.

Port Adelaide (28), Brisbane (33) and Adelaide (39) have recorded the best injury rates.

Some of Essendon’s brightest young talents have all been hurt this year with gun youngsters Zach Reid, Nik Cox and Harrison Jones and back-up tall James Stewart all falling victim to stress fractures.

The four talls have all endured long stints on the sidelines with the serious injuries, while Guelfi (calf and hamstring), Shiel and Darcy Parish (calf) have also been hit by soft tissue problems.

Reid was due to return mid-season but suffered a fresh hamstring problem in his second game back in the VFL earlier this month and remains four weeks away as part of another frustrating season.

Top pick in last year’s draft James Tsatas (knee) and Peter Wright (shoulder) have also been out since the start of the season. Reid, Wright and Parish are all expected back after the mid-season bye in three weeks.

Onballer Will Setterfield (foot) is also out indefinitely after a bright start to his new life at Tullamarine averaging 22 disposals across nine games.

You have to commend the current administration for identifying issues and actually putting things in place to try to correct them. Development and now S&C.

Only one more person to go now.

I applaud our new saviour / injury overlord.
And the knives are firmly ready for the minute it’s noticeable that he can’t fix our problems.
