Sean Murphy - fitness muggins - well… bye

I remember years ago listening to an interview with the collingwood fitness guy and he was talking about a period a few years earlier where they had a whole bunch of soft tissue injuries. He said was basically because the club changed direction in what they wanted from players, body composition wise. Said if you ask a bunch of high performance athletes to change body shape and running patterns, especially during the season, you’re going to have to resign yourself to a spate of injuries and just work through it.

Don’t know if that’s true or just him making excuses, but it stuck with me.

If there’s a ‘godfather’ offer we need to be offering…. It needs to be to Darren Burgess.

Forget Harley Reid.

If you want this club to be a club that can perform for 23 rounds, plus finals…… that’s your no. 1 target.

No player is going to solve our problems.

Not always the case, but it’s interesting how few games someone like Merrett has missed in his career and he would be considered elite with regard to preparation and professionalism (in maintaining his body).

Little from column A, little from column B though whether it’s luck or professionalism. Some guys are just cursed with their bodies

This is for you Murph

Sometimes a highly motivated person would jump at the chance to really test themselves at a club like ours with our situation. Just imagine that YOU are the one to turn a big club like us around … some people would see that as an immense positive

Depends on which thread you are in.

Tell us Nino why they are not suitable candidates? Was it the same person that told you this draft is weak?

Gone the way of the Dodo - a few years too late. Please please can they hire someone from a top 4 club and not North or WCE?

I’m sure Murphy had the same thoughts. And whoever was our S&C all the way back to Quinn twenty years ago.

But this is Essendon.
You can only imagine the success.

I’m not expecting Burgess for instance to want to shift. He has other motives. And again, unless the S&C staff are feeling on the outer at their club or a bit insecure, they are more likely to stay with those problems than inherit other ones.

The kind of people that jump at such chances are ones with far less experience. We might find the needle in the haystack. I doubt we do though.

Russel wasnt sacked. They mutually parted ways.

You know his job isnt to coach but to get the guys fit and up to performance standard.

Its the coaches job to get them to win and execute game plans.

He was there when Hawks won the 3 flags

He did well at Port Adelaide.

exactly.

Pipe dream is Burgess but he won’t want to leave SA.

Only way we could get someone to leave their current club is $$$$

My guess would be Russel who isn’t in the AFL system at the moment or some assistant who worked under a head honcho (which I pray isnt that)

Left field is a a candidate from another code.

It’s funny how one EFC employee found to be incompetent at the core fundamentals of his job gets the sack, yet another gets a two year contract extension.

Weird

No, just one of many issues.
Hopefully McPherson, the assistant coaches, a handful of board members and several senior players aren’t far behind him.

The coach can go too, but unfortunately that ain’t going to happen.

I agree - people look for one cause but there are many. This is but one step and they have to get the replacement right this time

these thank you and good-bye releases are a find and replace for person, position and time, and the rest is the standard plaudits

he joins a long list of those who can’t get us into shape

Is there somebody who’s been under Burgess we could poach who is an up and comer?

Why? So we can tell them: “implement what Burgess did or else?”

Worked when we got Murphy over from the 3peat Hawks.

He couldnt get this list up to standard.

Murphy wasnt the main the bloke at Hawks it was Russel wasnt it?

Maybe I don’t understand Murphy’s role enough but I thought it was his responsibility to be designing & implementing the training programs for every player. IF we have been training easier than others clubs that is Murphy’s fault isn’t it? If its been ramped up isn’t his responsibility to ensure its ramped up safely?

My biggest issue this year in particular has been the recovery management. When you’ve got guys returning from injury, especially guys with a clear history & they break down at training, then again that for mine means that their rehab has been mismanaged. I thought that was on Murphy. Now IF the coaches or anyone else like McPherson is pushing for the players to return early & effectively overruling Murphy then its a much broader & bigger issue that will not be fixed with simply replacing Murphy. We need a very skilled & professional expert who can get the whole group as fit & healthy as the rest of the comp.

Like in the dodo discussions, there is no one person, one area or 1 solution to the clubs problems. Everything needs to be done better.

Yep. Hence why poaching an underling to the main guy doesnt work
