Reality is, the industry know who the best people are. They likely have a shortlist. Sometimes you don’t need to do a long drawn out process to satisfy the hoards.
Just bc Essendon haven’t gone through processes in the past doesn’t mean Essendon has to do it so it can be seen to be changing ways .
Vozzo is experienced, he’s the CEO. He will get who he thinks is best.
Yes, he revealed recently that Carlton had segmented the fitness program and he’d lost direct oversight and control of the rehabilitation of injured players . He felt that that was a mistake and he would not agree to that setup again.
Murphy worked under Russell at Hawthorn. I’m not saying Russell isn’t great - his record for the most part is outstanding - but no one is perfect.
I don’t doubt that the performance program was ramped up over the past summer - the players couldn’t handle it because it was new and they weren’t used to the volume/intensity and the outcome is the brittle bodies get injured.
The unlucky part for me is the Jones ankle, Edwards, Hayes, Martin and Bryan ACLS and Drapers achilles. Tall stocks decimated.
Do the physios have final say on their training loads during rehab & then when they are cleared to play? I thought Murphy would be the one to give the green light to the match committee.
An underrated point to this whole disaster of injuries is the AFL soft cap. It’s hard to attract top fitness/performance managers due to the pay. Why would a top practitioner settle for 400-500k a year when they can go to Europe/US and get double that? The same applies to the staff in the high performance department. The work/life balance for the staffers in particular, and for what they get paid, is a joke.
The AFL was once the place where top practitioners wanted to go. Hell, we “invented” the modern day sport science. But the AFL’s commitment to equally has halted that progress. This is why players like Parish are going out and spending their own money to get a second opinion.
If the AFL increase the funds and potential for spending then they’ll attract better/more people to do the job.
There’s no way of telling for sure, but since 2000 when he was appointed we haven’t had a great run with injuries. Had injuries prior, yes of course, but feels worse since he came to the club.
Yeah I saw this recently also, was triggering to read after we had been potentially linked to him. In saying that he has helped Curnow turn it around, also Zac Williams has come back well.
It’s hard to pin fitness/injuries down on one person though - player professionalism must have a bit to do with it also
