No, the physios would tick off return to play. Though some others clubs do it differently.
So edgy and cynical- Swoon!
Probably the key is not to back off now because ultimately we need that level of conditioning anyway. If it takes another year to really get up to scratch (and a number of new soft tissue injuries as a result) well then so be it, next year is kinda ■■■■■■ already anyway so just need to take our medicine and hope we come out the other end well. Especially with how many kids we have need to get them training and fit to the right standard early
If I like the look of someone’s house, that isn’t on the market.
If I want to buy that house, I’m not asking if they’re interested in selling. I’m putting a large offer on the table, which makes the owners take notice and consider it.
That’s the game that this club needs to start playing, when identifying the best people to recruit.
I do wonder if financially paying for past mistakes has somewhat limited our ability to make changes & attract the right people. We know the review identified issues with fitness years ago but we possibly could not terminate Murphy’s contract having been forced into extra payouts to dodo & Truck under the soft cap.
2013 was the worst of several soft tissue plagues at the Pies. They got AIS experts to come in and do a report, they had a club meeting to inform fans about the issues and proposed actions
It happened again, iirc in 2019 but not as bad.
I am convinced that Fanta’s hammies were caused by him writing cheques his body could not cash, like running flat out down the guts trying to step an opponent at the last millisecond.
Burgess would have had offers of a fair bit more than $800k from clubs a lot bigger than Essendon.
Well, they got him a job with the AFL auditors so maybe.
Fark me, it’s still absolutely unbelievable what transpired there. I can’t go back and dwell on it, I just can’t , I’ll go insane.
No surprise, I reported this on Wednesday. More sackings to come.
This masthead?
Couple of points.
Murphy may have been very good at the technical aspects of the programs (rehab, strength and conditioning, preseason etc.) he put in place for the players, but it doesn’t mean the players followed them, or pushed themselves hard enough when required, or that he communicated what was required effectively.
You can lead a horse to water …
I know of a prestigious Melbourne girls school whose performances in rowing were pathetic. The principal recruited a successful hard ass fitness guy who had to teach the girls how hard they could push themselves in training. They had no idea how hard and how far they could push their bodies. This reminds me of Essendon post Sheedy. It took two years and they ended up winning the famous rowing race in England, basically the best high school rowing 4 in the world.
We need a strength and conditioning leader who is not only across the technical aspects, but also has the charisma to harness the young men’s ability to get the utmost out of their bodies. After the coach they need to be the next most respected, and feared, personality of the group.
You only have to look at us as physical specimens compared to GWS, or Geelong, or the Pies, to know we have been, and still are, miles off it.
Recruitment. For a few years now The Pies and Geelong, and possibly others, value resilience and durability above all else in their recruitment processes. Look at the players they cut/trade/release. The pies in particular made some, at the time, unpopular decisions. Treloar, Adams, Grundy, but if you follow the above, they make sense. Resilience and durability in the playing group leads to continuity, which leads to familiarity and succesfully implemented game plans. None of which we have had for years.
So many Premierships have been built off a durable back 6 who played week in week out together for multiple seasons.
We seem to specialise in the opposite. Recruit guys with bung knees because we get them cheap - Smith, Baldwin, Davey, Prismall, and others.
Hopefully we are on the cusp of change.
woah woah woah
hold on now
Are you saying Brad’s big speech about living an “AFL Lifestyle” was all a bunch of hot air???
I refuse to believe that
Is there some issue at my end or is the audio really bad?
Courtney Johns to go further back
May have been great at U/16 but wrecked his hip…get him cheap.
Sheeds kept spruiking him up but he was promoted on absolutely no form.
Such as??
If you had mentioned this 20 years ago I would have jumped in delight. These days though…
Whoever they bring in, just put some size on our players.
When you sit up close it really is stark just how thin and lean we are compared to every other side we play. I am sick of us being monstered.
“Always, ALWAYS, make sure you back up your spreadsheets”
Paraphrasing Bomber2013 but he said something to the effect of ‘Murphy and a number of his mates are gone at season end’
So you’d imagine it s a complete overhaul of the high performance dept.
