Sean Murphy - fitness muggins - well… bye

I want Darren Burgess but not sure if he would move back to Melbourne

Not only does Murphy need to go, but the whole strength and conditioning team need to go as well.

^^ THIS ^^

Most poorly prepared club in the comp.

They can take X with them, along with whoever it is that clags my inbox up with crap before & after a game.

I wonder what it is precisely about our preparation that has gone wrong. is it:

  • under work or over work?
  • not enough warm up stretching?
  • too many weights or not enough?
  • too rigid a program, or not enough discipline ?
  • strengthening wrong areas?
  • too much focus on gps numbers rather than “feel”, or is it ignoring the data?
  • too much weighting toward endurance or power?
  • incorrect diet or recovery?
  • too many games at Marvel
  • spongey floors

Its clearly a shambles, but I wonder why exactly?

At least we seem to have had fewer knee/syndesmosis types injuries this year. Maybe strengthening of leg muscles has helped this, but introduced other problems.

Oh boy, there are three to go, would be heartbreaking to cop any of these type injuries from here.

I caught up with a former colleague who has spent a bit of time as S&C with NRL clubs. We briefly touched on injury rehab at professional clubs and he interestingly mentioned not many have dedicated injury rehab staff these days, that it is instead a cross function performed by either upskilled S&Cs or Physios proficient in S&C (whether the role was deemed unnecessary or a victim of cost cutting, I’m not sure. EP’s had regularly owned the responsibility previously)

Wouldn’t be surprised if there is a situation in some clubs where responsibility for this has become vague and across multiple staff rather than a specific responsibility of a person within the performance team. Not sure what the structure is at EFC.

I do to but he’s tied up with Adelaide for the long term it would appear, plus he’s from SA I think.

If you get rid of the man making the sooointments, and replace him with someone e that knows the fk what they’re doing, we will soon find someone suitable.

But that won’t be happening for 2 more years.

Unless you don’t renew your memberships.

It must be more than just Murphy though?

We had lots of injuries under Crowe and the guy before him and the guy before him.

There has to be something else going on. We need to work out what that is otherwise just changing the head fitness guy isn’t going to fix the problem.

Made this same point myself a few weeks back. We have a long history of this problem going all the way back to the end of Quinn’s tenure.

I know a few hated Crowe, i didnt mind him.
But we havent been that fit as a team for a while.
This year though, epsecially later in the season we have run games out ok.
And we did have a fit list to begin the year for the first time in ages.
But the amount of recurring soft tissue injuries is a issue, and Murphy needs to take the fall.
Another Dud X appointment, and can we trust who he replaces him with.
some things have worked and some have not.

As with every important decision this club is knee jerk and does what they think they should do based off what other clubs have done in the past without thinking whether it will actually work for us.

Before making this call, I’d be very interested in how our performance team is structured and resourced.

Who makes the final call on guys like Stringer, Shiel, McGrath, Snelling, parish playing, is it the player - like Daniher playing injured, or is it Murphy making the final call.

Not sure. The thing is all we really know about how the performance team operates is that there is a head of performance (Murphy), he may be acting on advice or information or lack of both. We don’t know if he inherited a budget and structure that is inadequate for the task. Not sure on how many work under him and what their roles are.
I have my opinion about where I think there may be a failing, but no idea if that is actually the case.

Murphys philosophy is all about running he doesn’t believe in strength & conditioning is what I’ve have been told by S&C coaches in the VFL.

so Blitz’s call to sack everyone and anyone is not knee jerk?

We need a cutting edge experimental supplements program.

We need to steal Sydney’s whole medico/strength and conditioning team.

They have had an amazing run overall.

Do we actually pay good money to get good, nay excellent, fitness staff in?

Are these X type appointments designed to save $ because spongey floors indoors?

Is it the fact we use indoor facilities that have an ever so slight difference to the real thing that we end up with athletes unprepared for elite sport?

It can’t be that hard to solve. Its just one more thing that makes us as attractive as a dropped pie.

Theory: a whole bunch of our injuries came in the week leading up to round 1 (from memory: Stringer, Snelling, Jones…). And in round 1 we looked completely gassed from the opening bounce, and lost Langford in first 5 mins.

Season rapidly spiralled out of control from that point.

Did we just completely run our players into the ground in between JLT* and round 1? Or were we just underdone, and couldn’t ramp up training?
