What the ■■■■ are our FIVE development coaches working on if we’ve gone backwards in that department?
Parish is a so called leader of our club and yet he chooses to jog around half rat power. If someone of his standing and stature in the game needs reminding from development coaches about chasing opponents then we are in a far bigger hole than I had thought
That only tells half the story though.
Their attack speed was 7.1 km/h against our defence which was 6.9km/h.
Our attack was 8.3km/h against their defence of 8.3km/h.
They also had more of the ball and won the clearances so we’re always chasing tail to catch up. Their speed in attack didn’t need to be so great because the speed was used between centre of the square and the forward part of the centre square (CHF). Our speed in attack was mainly used in the backline trying to spread out to the wings.
Our ability to run is poor. But for a game where we lose by 120+ points, the disparity in those figures should be far greater.
What isn’t seen is how long they went at high speed (sprint), medium speed (run), low speed (jog). Both when we had the ball and without the ball. I get that we have access to ‘sprint efforts’ or something like that, but it doesn’t highlight how long they can sustain it.
That’s where the disparity will be.
The averages we get access to just flatten that out.
At this point I’d be offering the guy from WA who prepared Martin in the off-season to come help with our preseason. But I honestly don’t think anybody a new fitness coach is the answer, it’s all the lack of intensity of effort consistently from the players.
But I also think it’s about standards and Scott hasn’t helped this year by letting overweight and unfit player get games in the seniors whilst fit players miss out playing VFL.
Merrett also has to get a rocket up everybody preseason to bring the intensity and fight every day. All those who crack the sads and complain can be relegated to the VFL.

All those who crack the sads and complain can be relegated to the VFL.
3/4 of the list will be in the VFL
New fitness coach can’t fix it in one season either. It takes 3 to 4 years at least to shape the entire list.
Exactly
I mean I’m all up for turning this whole department into glue, but imagine Sean Murphy was in charge of this pivotal department for the last 20 years.

They need my fitness guy. He also trains elite sports people- I’m not in that category of course.
Straight up calls a bullshit effort. Then drills down - sleep, stress, diet why is performance being affected and what strategies do we need to employ. He also says performance isn’t linear, so you need to dig deeper so it doesn’t impact your confidence.
The players are aware of how important their sleep and diet are to their bodies.
They understand that you weaken you muscles, then in rest (and a diet) they recover stronger to allow you to withstand the next run.
Stress and mental health is a major factor. But in the competitive sports industry, players are going to be critiqued by anyone and everyone. Not everyone handles that kind of stress well.
I think they did a Fitbit trial last season on players. It worked well for some but for others, it had a negative impact. Their mindset would be screwed before they even got to training because they had a 86 sleep rating instead of a 90 so it gave them a mental thought that they weren’t getting optimal recovery to actually benefit from it even though they felt refreshed and recovered. Sometimes, having data just screws you up.
In the end, each player has to own their own decisions away from the club. Whether that is drinking habits, sleep habits, eating habits, getting to training on time, getting to community camps, etc. They are adults. There is no one there to watch over what players do.
Our biggest problem is getting continuity in these habits. So we need less injuries to be able to spend more time on building their bodies up.
We’ve really only had 1 uninterrupted pre-season. 2022 was covid affected. 2021 was shortened due to the 2020 shutdowns.
Every club has had the same situations, but our history of poor pre-seasons meant we were further behind every other team, so need time to catch up.
We need a few more pre-seasons into the group with minimal injury interruptions.
That’s not to say we shouldn’t change the S&C team during that period. And of course, it’s unknown how long it’ll take to catch up to the rest of the better teams.
He is useless!!!
This season has similarities to 2012 in that we had a good start but the heavy preseason saw us drop off a cliff. Remember that year we went from 11-4 to 11-11
It’s now about how quickly we get them physically where they need to be.
Also, let’s not forget Cox was one of the fittest blokes at the club upon arrival. That right there should hae told us where our conditioning was at
We need a cutting edge sports scientist.
What could possibly go wrong?
We need a psychologist too

And that is what Brad should have used this year to stamp out. You want to jog and let it be someones elses problem? Back to the VFL for you.
Do you think any of that lot from the GWS game will be punished for their insipid efforts by being dropped for the Collingwood game?
No. It’ll be someone coming in for Guelfi and that’s only coz he’s injured.
I will be done with Scott if he does not make sweeping changes against Collingwood. I don’t care if we get flogged again but at least it won’t be the same lazy ■■■■■■ responsible for the thrashing

Nah, that was because of the AOD 964 vials in 2012.
Let’s compare GWS, Sydney and St Kilda (the sides we were directly competing with for finals) with Essendon for player availability leading into September.
Of all three of those teams, each have a maximum of one best 22/senior player unavailable. ONE!
Yesterday we played/brought in 5 key senior players completely underdone; Stringer, Draper, Redmond, Caldwell and 2MP. Also add Ridley, Shiel, Jones and Zach Reid to best 22 who are unavailable. And finally Setterfield, who just returned from a 4 week foot after missing 12 weeks.
I sound like a broken record but it is the same story year after year. We limp to the finish line and then wonder why we never stand up in big games.
We need to address this part of the club urgently! F1ck off Sean Murphy and bring in the best!
The problem is the changes should of happened weeks ago
Now he will throw a few to lions on the big Friday night stage
When they fail through no fault of there own it won’t be any surprise to me!

People sooking about how physically big we are. Yes it plays a part, but we literally beat a Melbourne midfield in the wet with Viney, Oliver, Petrecca & Brayshaw by 5 goals. That was because we all stuck in, put our head over it and ACTUALLY FCKING TRIED. Setterfield had 10 tackles that day, Snelling had 10 tackles that day, Merrett had 7, Caldwell had 6 and we had 16 more tackles for the day. They TRIED that day. Snelling is five foot nothing and actually stuck into the contest.
These bunch of peahearts couldn’t have cared less about manning up or tackling, they wanted a cute bruise free game. They do not want it. They were jogging around like a Sunday picnic in the first 5 minutes ffs… That’s not fitness, that’s just not giving a fck. That’s effort. They could be marathon runners and it won’t make a difference because quite simply that could not give less of a fck about their opponents and don’t want to put the effort in and definitely didn’t want to put their heads over the ball (show Redman/Durham etc).
Yep. Mouth guards in for all of pre-season please.

And that is what Brad should have used this year to stamp out. You want to jog and let it be someones elses problem? Back to the VFL for you.
I actually thought that appeared to be mantra early on. Disappointing that the work rate dropped off significantly.
