My Prediction

Geelong went incredibly hard at trade week and did very well. Dangerfield is a great headline but hard to get too excited about Selwood (Jnr), Henderson and Smith. To me it still looks like it is essentially a net loss of talent.

I would imagine Henderson will play down back to take the place of Rivers but that still leaves a reasonable hole in their forward line. Hawkins is pretty consistent but unless Clark can find the right headspace then it looks light on up there. The development of Walker may help and the you have Kersten and Stanley. Losing Johnson will make their forward line a little more predictable, they have Motlop but really think they need him further up the ground.

The midfield is strong. Dangerfield is elite. Joel Selwood and Dangerfield running around next to each other is exciting. They still lack a little depth here as well as weird as that sounds. Scott Selwood will be a walk up start which indicates they need some of their younger players to come along. Caddy towards the end of the year started to really show talent and should go even better this year although I think he is likely to spend time up front as well. Blicavs is a handy round the ground ruck option and they will be hoping Smith can discover the form from earlier in his career.

The backline has been good and will stay so. Taylor will join Henderson and Lonergan which gives them good experience and coverage back there. They have Enright and Thurlow who will give good run off half back as well. Kolodjashnij came along nicely last year and he could be the key to releasing Henderson into the forward line.

Easy to forget that Geelong missed the eight last year. They have grand aspiration this year on the back of some nice recruiting. I am probably the only one and I am probably wrong but I don’t think it will help. I do think they are a chance to make the eight but only just. I predict somewhere from 8-10.

A few weeks ago Mitch Clarke sledged a Box Hill Hawks opponent's sister. The problem with that was this sister is the long-term girlffirend of Clarke's own team mate Mitch Duncan. Let's just saw Duncan was not overly impresssed.
So now this is a huge scandal that has erupted in AFL communication specialists land is it?

This media is laughably embarrassing if this story is an issue and is going to grow any legs.

We have to wait until rebecca wilson puts her 20c worth in, she will tell us whether its a story or not & how we should feel about it

Sledging a player’s family. Classy move.

How did the sister even find out?

He sledged the guy about his sister, poor wording. Most heard it apparently and Duncan was advised and he went to Clarke to vent his disapointment.

Geelongs Best 22
B Koldashnij Lonergan Taylor
HB Mackie Henderson Enright
C Caddy Dangerfield Blicavs
HF Bartel Clark Duncan
F Motlop Hawkins Menzel
R Smith J Selwood S Selwood
Int Cockatoo ThurlowGuthrie Lang
Emg: Vardy, Gregson Murdoch

Thought Enright had retired.

My guesses

  • Koldashnij comes on and plays a role in defence.
  • Thurlow comes on and becomes a regular in 22 possible HBF as well.
  • Cockatoo plays a lot of games as best 22.
  • Zac SMith to ruck - Who knows about vardys body, and they have drafted smith, they may prefer smith ruck, with Blicavs - mid/backup ruck.
    • yes motlop is starting small forward…but predict him to have midfield time too. and they actually lack small forward with stokes & Christenson leaving…Gregson is there and will probably play most games again as well., as wont have 22 all fit.

I think the Geelong side is quite good. Top 8 material
will depend on a few things

  • Making Kardinia park a fortress again
  • Smith/Menzel/Vardy/Clark getting over injury curses
  • Midfield is strong but will they Gel together.
  • How much will the loss of Stevie J/Stokes/Kelly be.
  • contributions of additions Dangerfield, Henderson, S Selwood.

Enjoying your work Houli

Walker’s gone, to Brisbane

Blicavs won their B&F, he’s far more than just handy. I find Geelong really hard to pick. Big big changes, and Danger’s one of the best 2-3 in the game. Not sure if a club’s ever really won their way up the ladder by this sort of horse-trading, they’ve laid a lot on the line to make it happen.

I think Blicavs was great in the first half of the season but impact dropped off as the year went on.

Not by much, if at all.
First half of the year he was splitting ruck minutes, mostly with Stanley. Stanley was pretty much out all the 2nd half of the year with Blicavs taking the lion’s share - Walker, Simpson, Vardy having occasional cameos.

Definitely wasn’t chalk & cheese.

18.5 disp / 13.3 hitouts / 4.8 marks / 5.4 tackles in the first half v
17.8 / 19.6 / 4.3 / 6.6 in the second half.

Either way he can be an absolute game changer. He’s out-nic-natting Nic-Nat at the moment.

Whats your opinion on Stanley will he get back in the 22?
Would you prefer Smith/ Blicavs Ruck combo or Stanley/Blicavs Combo
Or Vardy/Blicavs

I reckon they’ll run with Blicavs and one of Stanley, Vardy or Smith.

Smith’s been poop for 3 years, be interesting to see if they can convince him to pull his finger out.

tom hawkins doesn’t strike me as the sharpest tool. Don’t get me wrong love the way he plays and cna monster people now

but in the media rounds yesterday saying supporters need to taper their expectations of dangerfield, as he still have to “learn the geelong way”.

um you’ve pretty much sold the boat for the next 2 years on the premise dangerfield and the other nufties will win you a flag, so i think that ships sailed of not expecting to much.

and for ■■■■ sake it was only 8 odd years ago that the “geelong way” was always the bridesmaids when making it to the big dance, and pretty much bar bartel and selwood, most of the players who made you great in that era have retired.

pfft, asking supporters not to expect to much, FFA you didn’t pick up danger plus all the other half decent players and not expect to win the whole thing.
think anything outside of at least a gf appearence is a fail for this year for them. They’ve gone all in with these players, no backing out now.

Pretty much.

I’m not sure they’re really all that deep (now) with what they gave away. An injury to Hawkins or Taylor and you’re relying on Rhys Stanley to lead a line.

That and is Selwood/Danger really that much better than 2 of Mitchell/Hodge/Lewis?

Yes

i hate to admit it but if that side gets a good run with injuries they’ll be pretty hard to stop. Duncan has really really come on now and If motlop gets back to his best they’ll be super dangerous not to mention if menzel can stay on the park. Henderson is an upgrade on rivers. Keeping them fit will be the trick because they have no depth.
