Season 2019 - GWS

Would love to see the breakdown of memberships as they are quite popular in Canberra and Southern NSW. My parents and my brothers are both members and there is quite a bit of support for the Giants in the Gundagai/Wagga area

Ward, Kelly, Coniglio and de Boer hurt

Flynn, ■■■■■■■, O Halloran? They’ll live.

Yep I know a few GWS members from Canberra. Not there first team but lots buy a membership because they are pretty cheap and it’s a couple of games a year to drink beers with your mates watching footy.

Patton and potentially Langdon are also best 22 so 1/5 to 1/4 of their best side are missing.

And you are virtually guaranteed of a GF ticket if they ever make it

Langdon’s a stretch, played more NEAFL games than seniors this year.

Patton’s a ghost

The minimum GWS membership to get access to finals tickets is a reasonable investment. If they get to the Grand Final they’ll be the first ever team not to naturally sell out. Buy your ticket and sell it to the other team’s supporter for a thousand bucks. They only have to make it once for this scheme to be profitable.

Mind you, it seems they may be too soft to ever get there…

Journey ends: Injuries get the better of Giants veteran, former Tiger star

Brett Deledio will officially retire at season’s end

BRETT Deledio’s frustrating stint at Greater Western Sydney will end this year after the veteran announced his decision to retire at the end of the season.

Deledio’s time at the Giants has been dogged by a host of calf, Achilles and hamstring injuries.

He had hoped to play on next year after a promising run of games in 2019, but the 32-year-old knew he couldn’t continue into his 16th season after he suffered another setback in last week’s loss to Hawthorn.

Deledio is expected to be sidelined for at least a month with his latest calf strain and will need the Giants to play at least a couple of finals to have any chance of a farewell match.

At his best, Deledio was an elite kick who was damaging on the wing and through the midfield at Richmond, and regularly found the scoreboard.

In 2012, he averaged 27.5 disposals per game and kicked 17 goals to earn his first All Australian blazer and a career-best 13 votes in the Brownlow Medal.

A dual-club champion and two-time All Australian as a Tiger, Deledio played 18-plus games in his first 12 years at Richmond and was a durable star of the competition. The last four years, however, have been extremely tough for the highly skilled 32-year-old.

He managed just 11 matches in his final year at Punt Road because of a nagging Achilles problem but his move to GWS at the end of 2016 was expected to revitalise his premiership dreams.

However, persistent soft-tissue problems limited the No.1 selection at the 2004 NAB AFL Draft to just seven matches in 2017.

He and Griffen both went off a cliff pretty fast once they moved to Sydney.

Pre Martin finding a tank and consistency, was Richmonds’ best player there for a while.

Interesting comment from someone who went to the Hawthorn snow game.

The Hawthorn players were warming their hands in buckets of warm water when on the bench. The GWS players were using heat pads. Hawthorn were getting one touch plays, GWS were fumbling, taking two or three tries to control the ball.

It’s very likely that a big influence on the outcome was how each team tried to keep their hands warm.

Did Hawthorn players pee their pants?

From the result, more likely GWS did.

Coniglio signs on. Sucked in Carlton and Hawthorn.
